    If your slides are any good, as in excellent and high resolution, these corner drug store conversions are a poor excuse for digitization, you need 2500DPI if you are ever going use them in high quality book form publications. Cameras? Stepping into the world of medium format will forever change your perspective.

      Ah, the memories - in '56-'58, I was the sports and yearbook photographer in high school, with unlimited access to a fully Beseler-equipped darkroom and a full range of cameras. I used a Leica IIIc for 35mm (slides and roll film), a twin-lens Rolleiflex for 120 roll film, both 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 and 4x5 Graflex Speed Graphics (sheet film in holders), and a Linhof Super Technica 4x5 (sheet film in holders) for portrait work. Used Press 25 flashbulbs like popcorn, and had one of the first Honeywell strobes with a huge shoulder-strap-carried battery.

      I sent out Kodachrome slides, but processed everything else myself, including Ektachrome slides. My own cameras were an Argus C-3 and a Practica FX SLR (both 35mm).

      In later years I converted my own stuff to Nikon (FG, F3, F4, etc.) with a huge collection of Nikkor lenses of all types, and donated all of them to the Vintage Photography Department at Michigan State back in 1996 or so when I converted to digital equipment. Today everything I need fits in my shirt pocket .

      Still have hundreds of perfect 50-year-old slides and several Kodak Carousel trays, but my Carousel projector disappeared somewhere along the way in one of our ten moves.
      John,
      I have a carousel projector and a portable screen. If you would ever be willing to show them at a Chapter function, let me know and we'll arrange it. I know everyone would love to see them. Stu, you're also included in the invite, though you'd have a little further to travel to our Chapter.

        George;

        Where do you hold your Chapter functions? I get up to Cleveland fairly often of late (Cleveland Clinic), and I travel all over on JetBlue as a parent of pilot(s). My pictures would probably bore the group though as I started as a Drag Racer in 60-61 (raced in the first NHRA Nationals at Indy in 1961 w/57 Bel Air post). My new 63 Vette pictures were all taken in 1963 before I went to SEA in the Army.

          What NHRA class in 61? I attended that race and took some 8MM film. My 57 270HP Chevrolet was parked at the finish line on the spectator side. Took two TF/FED to Indy this year for the Cacklefest at the Nationals and also at Schumacher Racing.

            Stu,
            We hold them at various member's houses, garages, etc, mostly in Southeast MI. There may be a list on the Michigan Chapter's website. The new list for next year will probably go up after the first of the year.
            I'd love to see an event where some of the members each brough a carousel and gave a talk.

              Ron is correct about the store scanned copies. If anyone does buy a scanner, make sure it is compatible with the operating system of your computer. As to Paul's link, Nikon makes great scanners.As with anything, you get what you pay for. A good link for information is www.photo.net . Lots of good forums and car photos to boot. I bought a MIcroTek because of the 4x5, 120, and 35mm negatives and slides to copy into digital. I built my computer with a 64-bit operating system and there was no conversion from 32-bit offered from the company. There are devices that you can buy rather cheaply that mount on to SLR cameras so that you can copy slides with your camera. They are a waste of money. There were factory dedicated slide copiers that could be directly mounted to your camera or with adapters that work well.

                John;

                Sorry I didn't reply earlier. My 57 ran in B/S that entire year. It was a 57 Bel Air 2-door in the Turqoise (?) color. We were playing with weight transfer so the front end was up and the back end down. I just went for the fun of it along with a bunch from our club including a 41 Willys that we towed down. It was dark blue (very pretty car) and had a Caddy Engine with Hilburn Injection. I think most of us got creamed early against the big boys. I didn't plan on being too serious as I would have been embarrassed if I had to tear down.

                I sent my only copy of the 61 Nationals Program to our mutual friend Doug M. in California earlier this year. I still have some pictures though, but many of my Kodak color prints got stuck together through the years. One I did save was Eddy Hill's yellow twin Chevy dragster.

                One thing I do remember very well is that we camped out in a park in a tent. On Sunday night, being as how Indiana is dry on Sunday, the crews were having trailer races and ran out of their stock of Beer. They went into town (believe it was called Clairmont) and tried to open up the package goods stores to get more Beer. Well, the locals didn't take too kindly to that. I had a rude early awakening the next morning when the Indiana State Police were yelling through bull horns for us all to pack our tents and leave the park immediately! Didn't get much sleep that night and it was brutal that day watching the noisy fuel dragsters with a (after a sleepless night).

                  Page, I am getting an invalid attachment error...perhaps that # sign in the tile of that picture.

                    John and Stu, check with Dale Schafer as I believe he worked it. Camping wasn't all that much fun there, I didn't think. A few of us, including Tom Bryant on the TDB, slept in a Ford pickup with camper shell in a farmer's lot. Baths could be taken in his water trough--if it hadn't been so cold. I will try to find my pics of Indignity, a 396 Nassau Blue coupe, and Sam Gianinos's red '57 from Standard Auto Supply, I think on Gratiot Ave IIRC. I do remember a blue Dragon Snake (wires on front with mags on back) Color Me Gone, etc.) I used to date a girl who lived in Claremont.
