    Body Sub-Frame Cleanup

What can I use to cleanup the Rust on the Body Sub-Frame under my 63 Corvette? Is there something out there that works? Also what should I use to coat it like the Zinc Phosphate Green? What is everyone doing in this area? Idea's anyone! Thanks, Jim

    James,

If you're asking what will remove the rust.....chemical removal or media blasting. No cleaner I know of will "cleanup" rust. I choose to have the frame media blasted. After blasting I coated the frame with zinc chromate self etching primer. Next painted the frame with chassis black.

Jim, mid-year Corvettes have a full frame under them. Sub frames and thier related assemblies are usually found under uni-body cars, such as the K-frame that holds the engine and front suspension.

Michael has explained the only real way to handle rust on a frame. I assume that you want to treat the rust with the body on, so a lot of what you are doing is only cosmetic, since the worst rust will be where you can't reach it.

I have some Evapo-Rust, which supposedly treats rust, although I have'nt used it yet since I usually blast the rust off. There are zinc rich paints such as these http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/zinc.php , as well as other products that will encapsulate it. Eastwood also has some products which might work.

I cheated and spent about 500.00 and had it powdercoated.

They blasted in all the inside areas they could and it was less expensive than the blasting & paint, not to mention the mess.

I try to do everything from A to Z but they chemical wash the frame and the powdercoating went around corners and got in places that supprised me.

Acid dipping and submerging in paint is a good way also.

I sandblasted as my chassis was in poor condition. Primed with an epoxy primer. Made necessary repairs (major) reprimed and filled, coated the inside with POR15 and shot the outside with Awlgrip polyurethane.Has held up for 5 years so far but car is still in shop being worked on. Good Luck, Mike

                James,

Believe your referring to what is called the "bird cage". Many panels are attached to the bird cage to form a body. The lower channel many times will be rusty or just scaled over. I used a portable media blaster to shoot the underneath side of the channel and then sprayed the bare metal with zinc chromate primer.....did not paint as this area of bird cage as it received no paint during manufacturing process. If the car is not to judged one can spray with paint and give the area additional protection.

                  Thank You,
A Birdcage would be a Sub Frame, Right?
Is zinc chromate primer still available?

It's really not a sub frame, more of a stand alone structure. Your assembly manual will show this you the assembly. I use a brand called Nason (Dupont product) 491-17 etch primer. You can find all the particulars by googling the name and product code. I call it zinc chromate others may call it another, regardless it would be the first step in sealing up the bare metal.
