    1965 Hubcap Installation

I just had the original 1965 hubcaps restored to near perfection and polished. I prepped the caps and painted them. Before I attempt to install them on the original steel wheels which have also been restored, I am curious to see others methods of installation without putting any dings or dents in them again. I am sure many of you have a successful method that they can share. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. I am planning to go for a top flight next spring.

    Thanks,

    Jim

I place a soft towel/rag in my hand, put the hubcap over the valve stem, hit the edge of the hubcap opposite the valve stem with the palm of my hand (with the rag) to engage the cap, move to the sides and do the same thing and work my way around until secure. Never dented or scratched the cap by hitting the edges. If you will work your way around and engage a little at a time, the cap stays in place.

I used a piece of 1/4" thick rubber; about 4"X8". Placed on the edge of hubcap and used a dead-blow mallet to tap hubcap on wheel. Did as above poster says; start opposite valve stem and work around the hubcap. If the cap tabs are too spread out and hubcap doesn't want to go on, you can bend the tabs a little bit. But not very much or they might come off. You can hurt the palm of your hand if you don't watch out.

This may only apply to '65 wheelcovers, but I start with the valve stem at the bottom, then sitting on the ground, center the cap hole on the valve stem; plant the toes of one foot on that edge to hold from popping off when you whack (say) 90 degrees to either side. Then work your way around, or alternate sides, whacking with the heel/palm of your hand (maybe use a soft rag to spread the force).

It ain't elegant, but I swear the least with this method .

Thank you all for your responses, I have successfully put the caps on without incident, and followed your instructions.

            Kind regards,

            Jim
