Re: Thinking of an open trailer

You guys have no idea! Rock chips, no problem with the shield.

Just wait until you get caught in a monsoon rain! It was 1980 and I was pulling from Corvette Expo in Knoxville, TN. It rained so hard that it washed out a bridge on I-40 just outside Memphis, TN.

It took days to dry the 64 Roadster out and I don't think I ever really got the underbody clean again.

Yeah, just wait till it rains and you will walk, run, or crawl to pay big bucks for an enclosed trailer.

Mark, what are you towing with? (engine, trans, trans cooler, diff ratio, trailering pkg, ?)

I purchased my 7' x 20' all alluminum open trailer from R & P Trailer sales in Seneca, IL. I have since added a front stone guard and floor rail tie-downs. I have towed my 62 to Illinois and back ( 3000 miles round trip) 3 times. No problems and tows great. Trailer only weighs around 1500 lbs. See my pics on the thread "Trailoring a C1".

Great pictures and a really nice car! Have you had any issues with the tire nets?
            Thanks

Tire nets are from Mac's Tie Downs. I would never tow a car w/o them. Once tied down the, the car will never move side-to-side or front/back. No more "D" ring ties for this guy.

20' all aluminum enclosed trailer weighs about 2,600#. Figure 3,400# for your car and you are right at the limit.

Get an 8' wide trailer at least 18' for an open trailer, 20' for an enclosed. Make sure that it has brakes on all four wheels. Some of the el-cheapo trailers only have brakes on one axle.

I have a new open Featherlite with enclosed deck with a matching aluminum air dam.
This is the second Featherlite i have owned and never had a quality issue...
I do think i would go with a bigger tow vehicle than a Lexus 470 as a friend
had two transmissions in his without towing...

He towed his camper long distance so that could be the difference. If you Google "towing problems with 470 lexus" it could show if it will handle
                            it.

i had an opened trailer for one trip. i pulled my car from atlanta to orlando for the ncrs regional. it rained the entire trip and i got a rock chip on one side of the car. the car was nasty as he!! when i got there. when i got home i traded in the trailer for 75% of what i paid for it and got an enclosed trailer. now no matter what the weather in like the car is fresh when i get there.
its also a great place to hide cars from the wife that she does not know i bought. i have had a 70 hidden in there for over a year now. dont quite know how to berak the news to her that we own another corvette.
