    Thinking of an open trailer

I'm thinking of getting an open trailer. Our tow car has a tow cap of 6500. I took my car about 60 miles to a show over the weekend and it occurred to me that on the highway I am at extreme risk for stone chips. I enjoy driving the car locally but I really like my paint! Any tips? Trailer preferences?
    Thanks

If you are that worried about paint chips an open trailer is not your answer. Stones will be thrown up from the tow truck and passing cars. If you have a show car you need an enclosed trailer. If you want to enjoy your car drive it. Buy a bra for the front and enjoy the car. You don't say what kind of paint job you have. Just the opinion of someone who drives their Corvette over 6000 miles a summer in Ohio.

The paint is base coat / clear coat. I thought that with a full deck and a deflector in front I would be safe from chips but you may be right. I know that trailex makes an enclosed trailer that is around 2000lbs I guess I could pull that. Any good sources for new / used enclosed trailex?

Mark, This is the type of thing that keeps growing. First an enclosed trailer to take Corvette to shows. The Corvette becomes a "show car". Then a bigger tow vehicle enters the picture. Followed by another Corvette to be a "driver". The rolling ball keeps getting bigger and faster........

An enclosed trailer is the best but if your are looking at an open trailer I would make sure it has a full floor and a stone protector on the front of the trailer. I built the air damn on this trailer and I put an access door in the front of it to make it easy to get to the tie down straps.

              Bill,
So no issues with an open trailer as long as it has a stone shield and full deck?
              Thanks

That's all you need. I borrowed one to go pick up a car. 1000 miles later, not a single rock chip or even a bug splatter.

Agree with Brian "What's a trailer"? Just don't see the attraction of driving the car on and off the trailer. Kind of like having a big yacht in the desert. But just my old opinion

I used that open trailer for years and had no problems. I was always surprised at how clean the car was when we arrived.
If you are not experienced at trailering please get a hold of someone that will help you set up your rig. I have seen more guys get into trouble trying to save a couple of bucks and not tying down there car properly or having the wrong hitch and ball and knowing the inn's and out of trailering.
Before my daughter was born we always drove our show cars but after she was born we had to have a trailer so she could come with us.

                      Mark,
take a look at Tracwrap, a stick on plastic wrap "bra" that you peel off a paper backing and apply to the nose of your car. It sticks like crazy yet peels off easily with no residue left behind, and will not pull your paint off. It goes on with many wrinkles and some bubbles, so it is visible and is not pretty, but it works to prevent stone chips. I just used it for 400 mile drive to CAL Regional, in the rain. Peeled it off and cleaned up car, and no harm, no foul. After the meet, I applied a couple more strips of it for the 400 mile drive home, this time in clear weather. Peeled it off at home, and again, no harm, no foul. Best thing is you can contact Tracwrap and they will send you a 20 ' sample roll to see how you like it.

Years ago when I was showing NCCC, the first trip out on my freshly painted car on an open trailer, a rock hit the windshield.

well it didn't chip the paint! That is really bad!!! I spoke to a dealer today and he really thinks that an enclosed trailer is just too heavy for my tow vehicle so it's open or none!
