57 Corvette home from the Body Shop after 4.5 years!!!! WHAT DO I DO NEXT? WIRING????

    Hey Everyone!

I bought this 57 in late summer 05 with its original engine and tranny. According to my painter it was without question an original Venetian Red Corvette with Beige interior, However when I bought her, she was black with beige interior and coves and though she looked cute, it was in rough shape.

I started this nut and bolt restoration in Nov of 05. I cataloged most of the disassembly of the Corvette onto the Corvette Forum. I pulled the body in March of 06. The car went out for paint in May of 2007 and the painter said 4 months! Meanwhile I have learned a few things along the way, like never give a painter a car you have soooo much money tied up into without a contract stating the end price, and promising a due date. I have also learned a great deal of patience, as without a contract, and with half of the cost of the paint job due at the beginning, I have basically been at this guy's mercy!

O.K. enough ranting.... He may have taken a long time, but for the most part he did pretty good work.

Here's a couple of pics snapped with my I-Phone.

So I now have this car back, and am ready for final assembly, but I have to admit I am intimidated!

It's been over 5 years since I pulled this thing apart, and pics or not... I don't remember exactly how to put it all back together and let's face it... the 57 assembly manual is not the easiest thing to read!

So, what's the first step to re-assemble?

Frame is 100% restored and bolted to body, Body is 100% restored. I need to hang pedals, attach gas and break lines, exhaust, wire the car, install the new Al Knoch interior, etc. etc. etc.... Finish building the doors, (install windows etc...) It seems like so much to do... where do I start?

Part of me wishes I could just give this to a pro to finish, but my first child (it's a boy!) is due one month from today, and I already have a TON of money invested in this Corvette. I would like to do as much myself as I can!

    Thanks in advance!!!
    Jacob

    Jacob,
The car looks great. You need to take a deep breath and collect yourself from the body shop shock.

I wish you had installed the brake lines on the chassis first, as it would have been easier. Same with the fuel lines. But that being said, I would concentrate getting the these item hooked up so the car will stop and run. The pedals obviously need to be hooked up.

Once you have the fuel lines, master cyliner, brake lines, fuel pump, carb, fuel filter, installed, then you can tackel the wiring harness.

The ST-12 BOOK is a very good service manual to help you with many of these items.

And your local NCRS Chapter might want to have a Tech Seminar at your home to help.

Just take your time and enjoy. You are close to the end.

      Nice car, Jacob.

The easiest way to reassemble a car is to do it in the sequence the factory did, but there is no set way to build a car. You have to think your way through this, and be careful not to install something that you will have to remove to get other components in.

On your car the hardest stuff already appears to be done, and you should get a lot of satisfaction finishing the reassembly. For us males, it's a lot like "giving birth".

Just start somewhere, take your time, and if you make a mistake undo it and move on. If you're careful, all you lose is a little time.

Thanks a bunch Paul and James! Great points!
James, your wish was granted... The gas and break lines have been installed on the chassis, they just aren't attached to the stop and go parts of the car yet. I also had the engine dyno' graphed before I had it installed on the restored chassis, so carbs and related go parts for the 283 are bolted up and ready to fire after attaching the fuel line to the fuel pump

That being said, is it wiring time? Seems like pedals may be in the way if I hang them before I wire?

I should probably install heater box and core soon???

The ncrs tech seminar would be fantastic!!!! GR8 idea, the problem is that I live on a little island with an hour ferry ride commute!!! It would be a nice trip though!!!

Now that it's finally home, I believe I would sit back and stare at it for a couple or three days.

            Jacob,

Where do you live? I would be fair to guess there is a TDB member within an hour or two from your home that would be willing to share a car with you for inspection. Better yet if its original.

Otherwise, my suggestion would be to wait a little bit and enjoy how far you have come. Then......................sign up to become an OJ at a Chapter or Regional event. You could find some great direction that will go much further than just a manual.

Just my own thoughts. The car looks GREAT! More pics?

              Thanks a bunch Guys!

I live in the San Juan Islands, just about an hour drive north of Seattle and then an hour ferry ride northwest, and would gladly accept local help!

Tim, what is an OJ at a chapter or regional event?

              Thanks,

Glad to see you got it out finally. It's been a while since we have seen any updates. Glad you got over that "hump"

The next regional for you to get ideas and talk with others would be Seaside, OR in May

There are others, but that seems to be the closest to Wa

                    FYI:

When you do the wiring remember that if you follow the wiring diagram for the amp meter it will show negative as the diagram is incorrect.
You need to switch the wires which I felt was sort of "iffy" but it works. The rest of the diagram(s) is correct to the best of my knowledge..

Don't forget the accelerator rod seal goes under the firewall insulation

oj all the shows you can. get on different teams. you will learn a lot about the car and a lot about the do's and dont's. ask questions. i would get on a chassis team while i was working on the chassis, interior team while working on the interior. you get the picture. i learned the same lesson at the body shop. 2.5 years and double the money i was expecting. i too will never do that again. my body guy is a long time friend and he still got me.

As for the heator assy. U can wait till a little later in the chain of assy. as I installed mine fully assembled on to the fire wall, there is plenty of room under the 56/57 passanger sides as long as seat frames are out of car, also when you are ready to do a first start up , U can opp to just by pass the heator & valve or install it to check for coolant leaks all at once. Damed if my heator core dripped when I hooked it up even though i had it pressured checked . My advice is hook everthing under dash u can stand to do once the firewall pad is in. Leave door guts for last so you can recouparate from dash work.
