I've just refinished my 65 in base/clear. I've reviewed the Judging Manual and Scoring Sheets. I'm wondering if I'll receive a total deduction for paint. It is the correct Rally Red. None of the paint stores I checked with could sell lacquer. Does anyone know where lacquer can be bought? I'm now wondering if it is possible to achieve Top Flight status with the car unless I repaint using lacquer. Thanks

Re: Base/Clear
Absolutely it is possable to receive top flight with BC/C.If you leave some of the orange peel when you sand the clear and you dull down the door jams, windshield wiper cavities, side gills, etc and such that are suppose to be dull you shouldn't receive a full deduct.- Top

Re: Base/Clear
I've received multiple TOP FLITEs, from Chapter to National, with a BC/CC Marina Blue paint. I refuse to "mess up" a beautiful paint job with dulling jambs etc. Yet, with a full deduct for paint (about 2%) I still score close to 97%. No "factory" overspray any place either.
Yes, Top Flite is obtainable!!!!
Its kind of fun to watch the judges discuss among themselves how they are going to break the news to me about a total deduct and then see the sigh of relieve on their faces when I cheerfully understand.
The "wow" factor comments at a typical car show or cruise-in far outweigh a 2% deduct.- Top

Re: Base/Clear
Mike,
The car is not judged on what material it was actually painted with, it is judged on how it appears. If the car looks like typical factory production, there is no deduct. Overdone concours lacquer would take a complete deduct as much as today's typical BC/CC would.- Top

Stephen,
I like the white wall tires with Rally's against Marina Blue. What make/size tires are on your car??- Top

Re: Base/Clear
Timothy, The tires are Goodyear Power Cushion 775X15 from Kelsey.
Jerry, That is a "home brew" paint job. My sons did it. One is a computer analyst and the other is an electrical engineer. They do this as a hobby. When it comes to automotive restoration, they are both "anal"!!
This Charger is another one of their projects, start to finish.- Top
