Value of original 1966 Knock offs

I have a friend who has an original set of five 1966 knock off wheels and he asked me the value the other day and i really wasnt sure what to tell him. I have seen them listed for as much as 14,000 on ebay, but i dont think they ever actually sell for that amount. He is considering selling them, so i told him i would do my best to dig around and find a somewhat accurate value for the wheels.

So, if you had a set of 5 original 66 knock offs, what would you ask for them?

    Thanks!

controversial reply...in todays market $3800-4400 original with hardware in 8 or better condition out of 10....else hold out for $9800 and GM stock to trade at $51.

hmmm, i thought they might be worth a little more than that considering that the reproductions sell for around 2 grand. However, like i said, i have never seen a set sell, i have only noticed what people list them for. I didnt think they actually sold for 10-14,000, but you never know just how much some people will spend on original parts.

        Christopher,

Do you have an ebay account? If so, sign in, punch in your search, then click "completed listings." That will show what sold (or didn't sell) and for how much.

Depends a great deal on the condition of them. I know some wheel restorers charge $1000. each wheel to properly restore them. This doesn't include restoring the hardware.

Always good for a rough idea perspective, Joe, but a lot of actual sales close via cash offers being sent to the listing sellers. I would agree that a "sold" search is a good starting point...

Around 2007 I had a good friend restoring an original '67 435 coupe. I was asked to help find a near mint set of original bolts-ons for his car. The friend did not want repos.
I found a set of four brand spanking new, in GM parts-counter boxes from the late 1960s. The were offered for sale with likewise NOS starbursts, still in their late '60s GM parts boxes. The firm asking price on these four wheels and hardware was $20K.
I offered on behalf of my friend a cash offer of $17,500, which was flatly declined.
Some on here may remember seeing these same said NOS wheels offered for sale at both Carlisle and Chicago's Chevy/Vette/Fest around 2008.

The last time I heard of these rare NOS wheels, they had never sold .....and the price had been slashed a bunch.

                  Ridge,

What you say is true. I did not mean to imply that ebay is the end all, be all setter of prices.

I would guess 8K. I heard that a mint set of 5 KO wheels with NOS non dot goldline tires sold for 13k last week. I thought that the buyer did fairly well on that one. Just an FYI

Joe, you and I are on the same page, in a lot more ways than the prices.

I just noticed that we had both joined the NCRS on the same day, we both love St.Louis and C2s, and we have almost the same amount of posts on the TDB. I pass thru your beautiful city every October on my trip to Chicago for the muscle car show.

The only difference in us is that you are 10 years younger than I, .....and better looking. That's me in the yellow cap parked under the arch....

                        Ridge,

You must be my long lost twin brother! I hope to meet you sometime on the great Corvette highway. What Chicago show is that?

Joe, it's the show founded by Bob Ashton, former general manager of the Chevy/Vette/Fest, and some other partners.

To give you a perspecive on what they might or might not be worth. I have a set of 4 restored original 1965 knock-offs with all the hardware, rechromed spinners, new center cones and NOS center caps. All wheels are dated in the first six months of '65. I've had them at Carlisle the last two years and recently advertised in the July-August Drive Line Magazine for $6k and have had one call. I would have thought that they would have sold at this price but I may be too high since it is only a set of 4.

Good Luck with your friend's attempt to sell his wheels.

                            Best Regards,
