Record $ 514 Price for NOS Starter Solenoid

eBay, of course; (link below). Box never opened (buyer pulls string) so he/she doesn't know if cap is brown or black Bakelite, or if body is cadmium or zinc plated, or painted semi-gloss black. Some evidence of moisture stains.

Pics below are of one I have; note instructions are dated 7-63. Paid $42 US for mine .

What's the consensus on selling parts in sealed boxes, especially when there are known unknowns (thanks, Donald Rumsfeld) with service configurations ? Better to show pics prior to and after opening ?

The date on instruction sheets supplied with some GM or Delco parts does not necessarily imply anything about when the part was manufactured. Often, these sheets are very "generic". Also, the same sheet (with the same date) is used for as long as it's applicable.

Many times it is unnecessary to waste money on such things (although, many NCRS folks like to brag about how much they spend on parts/restoration).
If a person has an old starter with the original solenoid on it, the solenoid can be disassembled and the original Delco bakelite cap can be re-installed on a brand new (generic) solenoid, including the new internals/contacts from the new solenoid. The early Delco bakelite cap is the main distinguishable part of a solenoid.
Furthermore, the solenoids on original hi-torque starters had a LONG (3/4in) lower terminal. Replacement solenoids are provided with a long screw and a brass sleeve to be used on a hi-torque starter. By disassembling an original solenoid from a hi-torque starter, that long lower terminal can be swapped over to the replacement solenoid.

Clem -- this guy must have a twin brother; eBay auction just ended (Oct 23) on another that had 28 bids and ended at $ 566 . Must be other than the Corvette community willing pay these prices.

i think these prices are paid by professional restorers who have the corvette owners signed blank check.
