Seat belt buckle disassembly, L '66- all '67

I need to refinish the seat belt latch buttons with their bowtie logo. Is there a way to pry open the buckle assembly to gain access? Perhaps someone has an illustration or photo of same.

In lieu of refinishing, are there any reproductions available of this part? Could not find any from the usual suspects. Thanks.

Jeff - I use a small screw driver to pry one of back corners of the top piece out slightly and a second screw driver to lift the top piece from the bottom piece and then do the other corner and the top piece will come off at the back and then push the top piece forward to disengage the the front. Hi Jeff,

Here are some pictures of my 66 buckles that I restored without taking apart.

        Jeff,

Take a look at this thread of 66-67 seat belt buckles.

        https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...uckle&uid=2371

It will answer all your questions on seat belt disassembly and refinishing.
The thread became a Restorer Story.

With the recent fix in the archives, the photos are there too.

Is there a way to remove the cloth without re-stiching, I want to do my 67 belts and the cloth is in V/G condition.

            Tim,

If you have the original belt retainer (cast steel bar with a steel strap), I found that you have to unstitch the end of the belt to remove the retainer and buckle back from the belt.

Take a look at the belt retainer in the picture of the parts in the archived post. There is a triple fold in the end of the belt which won't fit through the strap.

With a little work, you can remove the other parts from the buckle back without unstitching the end. But unstitching the end of the belt, makes disassembly and reassembly very easy.

Now service replacement belts have a belt retainer in the form of an "I" with no strap, so that you can remove the belt without unstitching the end.

The Restorer story on the belt buckle is in the summer 2006 issue "RCF-65 Seat Belt Buckles."

              Thanks Jerry,

I appreciate the info and pictures. It looks like a November project, I can't use the belts because they will not adjust.

                Hi Jerry,

Does this mean ALL the missing photos from the archives have been re-attached?

                  Scott,

Not sure all the photos have been reattached, but 920 of mine have been.

Rob M.did a great job of importing the photos from various image sites before we did the the switchover to the new site in 2008-09.

Here's one of my 2004 photos on a 67 gas tank emblem:

Rob, you have preserved history, I'll buy you a Rollin Rock anytime.

I've gotten a new manicueist since this photo.

                  But, I'm still havng fun
