Silver/Silver 65 colour of radio side panels

    Gents,
The 65 JG says that the radio side panels are painted interior colour.

However on my silver/silver 65 and two others that I have checked they are painted black. See below.
I think they should stay black, what do you think?
    Thanks,
    Gary

'consensus' won't prevent a points deduction unless the JG is changed
C'mon all you out there with an opinion....let's get a debate going along the lines of the old chestnut: "mitted or not mitted blackout?" whereby JG says "mitted" yet all experts and the guys that were actually on the assy line (eg John H) say "mitted blackout never happened"

The radio side panels were "mitted", but they were mitted black.

65 silver convertible interior is an odd ball in that the dash color (black) does not match the interior color (silver). I would guess this made it simple for GM in that a silver color was not used on interior dash. Black dash pads too.

I have only seen a couple silver interior coupes. But there may be some differences there too. Others can comment. Definitely a rare combo and very striking.

                  Is a 1966 Silver/Silver Coupe, the same as 1965 Silver/Silver coupe?

                    David -

The interior chart in the '66 JG shows silver interiors have gray carpet and black dash (which would include the radio side panels).

Its been judged twice before, regional & chapter and this issue wasnt picked up.
So I will leave them black anf I think it looks better than silver.

John -- that's part of the problem for '65s; the interior trim code table (TIM&JG, 5th ed., pg 22) shows "silver dash color" for silver-coded trim tags [an error]. But a note at the bottom of section 5, page 34. "Dash panel area" says that cars with 426 or 427 codes (or 437 and 438) have black dash panels and dash pads". Then, next page, "side trim panels" says they are painted interior color".

So there is potential for misinterpretation if one has never seen an original interior.

I have an unrestored, untouched 65 Convertible that is silver with silver leather interior. The dash radio side panel covers are black, the same as the dash.

Big Gaz - to save you a deduction at the next judging meet I'll lend you my silver side panels

So, gents, what's the protocol to have the JG changed? I'd concede from 'consensus' and 'common sense' that the panels should probably be black but the 5th edition '65 JG VERY CLEARLY & UNAMBIGUOUSLY states: "Fiberglass trim panels are located on each side of the dash panel center which are painted interior color and secured with 2 chrome Phillips screws with integral washers". Interior color on 426 or 427 is silver therefore these panels, acording to the JG, should be silver.

I won't be getting my black paint out 'till the JG is changed
