I am running CJ4 15W40 in my 63 327. I also have a rebuilt 350 (new rebuild - broke in). Can I run same oil in it?

Re: Cj-4 oil question
What type of camshaft / lifters are you using in the 350? The type of valvetrain is what determines whether or not you should run CJ-4. Have you read Duke's famous engine oil article lately? I can post a link to it if you like. If you're using CJ-4 with a fresh build, I'd use a can of GM Engine Oil Supplement (E.O.S), too.

Re: Cj-4 oil question
I recommend CJ-4 in all vintage engines with sliding surface valve trains.
I take it you've never read the article Joe referred to, which has been published in The Corvette Restorer and a few chapter newsletters. It will answer any oil questions you have and blow up all the internet myths. Here it is - starts on page 3:

Re: Cj-4 oil question
The article below just appeared in the fourth quarter "Heart of Ohio Newsletter".
There appears to be a slight conflict of information between the effectiveness of CJ4 and CI4 grades of motor oil for vintage engines.
Is this more updated information or just a differance of opinion?
By Jeff Bernhardt
Jeff Bernhardt has provided a number of items below to help educate us gearheads driving these older cars relative to the kind of oil we should and should not be using:
What this stuff used to do was this: the zinc in the ZDDP would bond to the internal metal of our engines and form a protective "zinc plating" to prevent metal-to-metal wear.
5" H.G; the word got out that they were no longer being made and in short supply, and Corvette owners stockpiled their own garages with them. Try to find one now.

Re: Cj-4 oil question
"Sounds like Mr. Bernard has been reading 'that other' web site too much. Rotella CJ4 has ~1200 zinc, pretty much the perfect level for our engines.

Re: Cj-4 oil question
No, it's not a difference of opinion. It's a matter of one guy has facts and the other guy has his head up his a...
I can't believe anyone on this site would even consider that this guy has any credibility, nothwithstanding that he barely writes at the junior high level. "Stuff"? How about just calling it what it is - oil!
My sources of information included the API 1509 document that specifies the basic physical properties and tests to certify motor oil. It's on the Web and the link is in my article.
I doubt if this clown has ever heard of the API 1509 document.
Dowload it and read it for yourself.
I pity the poor slobs who have to endure this "newsletter", but then they probably believe every conspiricy theory that ever crossed their path.
It's just amazing some of the trash that gets printed.
