    Wheel weight questions

First, I've done a search and found a little help, but most of the information in the board archive and Gary Beaupre's article cover the mid years very well. However, there is very little information pertaining to the wheel balance weights found on the earlier (68-73) C-3's. Not sure whether thats because there isn't much info about them cuz they're so "new" or the information was destroyed in the plant fire, which I doubt.

Here goes with the questions. At what point did Micro start adding the metric "grams" on the right side of the weight? When did they change their molds doing away with the "wings" on the top of the weights?

I recently came upon a sizeable number of old Micro weights, with the majority of the weights being labeled with a "B" or "C" rather than the weight being shown. Does anyone know much about these, like when they were used, etc?

Anybody with accurate information, I'd love to hear it.

    Kurt,

Only empirical info. The metric markings came some time (I don't know when, but I think a post on a previous thread addressed this) after 1972 and I think after 1973.

I don't know about the "wings" but I have seen them on some weights in the 1968-1972 range. I think only on some size(s) but I have not tracked that very well. I have been sending pictures, as I come on original examples, to Gary. I have not seen any original 1968 to 1972 wheel weights that differ from what Gary wrote in his article, but I can't tell you I have come across ALL the examples he lists.

That said I don't think I have seen any 1968-1972 weights with the letters you are talking about, but a picture might help me. If these are small letter, like maybe mold marks, I may have overlooked them.

      Kurt,

I can tell you by '75 the weights were by Perfect Equipment and were only measured in ounces - no metric. Here's a shot of a 9k mile '75 Bowtie with all five original tires. I'm going to guess the conversion was leter in the 70's; something like '78 perhaps.

Gary B. knows a lot about weights and so does Ray Wells. You might want to contact him too.

Terry, the lettered weights I was talking about, the one's with the letters on them instead of weights, have a letter "B" or "C" on each side of the weight in the same place the others have the weight markings. I'll be out flying around until next Thursday night and will try to send you pictures when I get back. If not, I'll make sure I bring some to Frisco for you to look at. With Gary's article and the lack of C3 information out there, this and other issues, such as weight shape, etc. have me scratching my head and other parts.

Frisco will be fine. It will be here before we know it.

I know '73 still had the Micros with ounces on both sides. I've seen some Micros in my travels that had an "A" or "B" but I'm not sure of their application.

I just judged a 30,000 mile 73 last week that the original spare had this same weight on.
