Think I discarded my original starter heat shield many years ago. Purchased a new one that is aluminum and not original. Need to find an original repalcement and find out exactly how it is mounted. Can't find a diagram in any of the catalogs I have.

Re: 72 starter heat shield
I can't tell from your profile information if your looking for a big block shield or not. First they are stainless steel in material and for the big block application they cover the solenoid portion of the starter. One end of the shield is attached to the cylinder case (engine block) under the bolt that secures the ground strap cable. The other end of the shield is attached to the solenoid near the cap end with an oddball configured cylinder ? nut. The shield is extremely close to the solenoid and to the exhaust manifold.- Top

John-----
If you're talking about the big block solenoid heat shield, Dr. Rebuild sells a perfect reproduction of the stainless steel shield. They also may have some NOS examples left.
I believe Dr. Rebuild also has available a good reproduction of the small block shield. This shield is mild steel and should be painted semi-gloss black.
By the way, I have NEVER seen an original or reproduction heat shield for either big block or small block that was made of aluminum. If this is a big block shield, I think you may be mis-identifying a stainless steel shield as being aluminum. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 starter heat shield
I have several original starter heat shields (3851295) as well as a few NOS heat shields (3959552).
Send me a PM if interested in buying one of them.
The 64-68 Corvettes use shield # 3851295 that attaches with a screw (GM # 9420494)
The 69-80 Corvettes use shield # 3959552 which is attached with a "tab".

Re: 72 starter heat shield
Enclosed are 4 photos my NOS shields, GM # 3851295 (later version?) and GM # 3959552.
Both have the stamped letter "S" overlapping another "S" logo.
The 3851295 (later version?) shield is attached to the brace with a hex self-tapping screw.
The 3959552 brace is attached to the brace with the small "tab" and has a 1/4" dia. hole on the 1 7/16" by 2 1/2" section.
I also have used original shields with the original starter braces.

Re: 72 starter heat shield
I also have one other original starter shield attached to an original brace with an original screw that I believe is the early version of the 3851295 shield used on 1963-1967 Corvettes. This shield is larger then the 2 NOS shields that I have. I painted the assembly about 20 years ago.

Re: 72 starter heat shield
After doing more research This is what I have found. All 3 shields have the stamped letter "S" overlapping another letter "S" logo.
1. Shield on left: GM # 3851295 used on 1964-1968 Corvettes.
2. Shield in center: GM # 3959552 used on 1969-1974 Corvettes.
3. Shield on right side: GM # 3959552 used on 1975-1982 Corvettes.
Apparently there were 2 different version of the 3959552.
I would appreciate any comments as my research on the 3959552 shield is basically based on "here say" research without any documentation.

The original shield on my 1969 is the 3959552 which attaches to the brace with a self-tapping screw.
It's always amazed me that GM made this shield in 2 different configurations without changing the part number. This kind of a change almost always results in a new part number. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I agree. It is unusual that there was not a part number change for the 3959552 shield.
The only difference between a 1963 starter brace (GM # 3816511) and the 1964-1968 starter brace (GM # 3851294) is a small hole for the hex head self-tapping screw to attach the top of the shield.
Enclosed is a photo.

Re: 72 starter heat shield
David,
What is the application of the second from the bottom 3965589 starter brace. I am thinking it's a 350 motor with a 163 tooth flywheel, is that correct.- Top

Re: 72 starter heat shield
70-72 Corvette (350)(exc. H.D. 4-speed)
My 1981 Corvette Parts Catalog (Nov. 1981) also lists it for the following in Gr. 2.042:
73-76 Y (305,350)
77-82 Y
Apparently it's a very common brace.
I also have a used original 3965589 brace with an original 5/16"-18 X 1/2" washer-head bolt w/ "RBW" logo.
