    62 Generator repair

It seems athat the generator on my 62 has given it up. The battery discharges when I drive the car and the ammeter always sits on the negative side (when the engine is revved to above 2000 rpm it moves slightly towards to positive side). This has been going on for a bit and I have observed the ammeter sometimes going strongly to the positive side at which time the blinkers begin to function normally. When I disconnect the battery whilst the car is running at idle it dies immediately, if I have it revved to above 2000 rpm it takes a little bit longer to die. Is my conclusion that the generator is bad correct? Any suggestions for possible repair?

    Thanks,
    Terry

Check the brushes. That was my problem. Sand the commutator with 600 or 800 wet or dry while it is apart.

And don't forget to "Polarize" the regulator! Do this whenever you disconnect the battery. After you get the generator back on and hooked up, when you reconnect the battery, take a short piece of wire and touch the Batt. and Arm. terminals on the regulator for only an instant. You will see a spark flash. This re-establishes a current flow in the regulator and you will be good to go.

        Terry,
Brushes are most likely the problem and the regulator 2nd.

I have a tug at the airport that has the same delco regulator & generator.

I take the battery out at least once a month to use elswhere or lend it to someone for a jump and I don't have to polorize as they have been a teem here for years.

I did replace the regulator once and polorized then.

It's book but if you forget to polorize nothing will blow up. Since they have been a polorized pair working together it would not be easy to revers them if you tried.

Problem fixed. As I was removing the generator the field wire broke just at the connector. When I looked at the wire it looked as though as I was moving the wire the last strand broke. I got it all reconnected and now I'm getting juice. Thanks for the suggestions.
