    Sway bar broadcast codes

Did sway bars have broadcast codes like shocks and springs? How did the guy on the line know which bar to put on a HD suspension car?

    Thx,

I've not seen a code on any C2 or C3 sway bar. However, it's very possible that the bins or racks the bars were supplied to PRODUCTION had such a code on them. If so, that's how the line folks knew which bar was which.

I have often (but not always) seen a paper wrapped around the passenger side of the bar -- on the part of the bar going toward the sway bar link. I suspect there was some code on this paper, but I have yet to see one in good enough condition to discern any printing on the tag. Even on a Corvette with 4 miles.

According to my study of late model C3 build sheets (73-82), three digits were printed on the sheet in the box 21 with the printed label STAB BAR. When FE7 (Gymkhana) was called out, we see 596 on the build sheet. The GM# was 351596 and when base suspension was called out GM# 318 was reference. GM# 3871318 was the part number for the 7/8" bar. With either option, was the rear stab bar called out...and we wouldn't expect it with base suspension.

Also, once workers knew they had an FE7, indicated by the FE7 scrawled on the front cross member, this signaled to pull heavy-duty suspension parts but these were identified by broadcast codes called out on the build sheet.

I suspect if we could read the label taped to the passenger side sway bar, described by Terry, it would read either 596 or 318. But I've seen lots of low-mileage Corvettes but the code has always been obscured.

          Tom,

Great info. I know what you mean about the elusive label. Here are two photos of a '75 Bowtie with onlly 9k miles...just the glue left!!

Anybody have a picture of any sway bar tag?

          Thanks,

            Tom,

Glad you referenced mid-70's build sheets. Seems like they quit writing job numbers on these sheets. All the books that show photographs of the sheet have no hand written number and my original sheet also does not.

There is a 6-digit body number in Box 8. Is that number written on the car. Is there a job # in a different box on the sheet?

            Thanks,

Yes...my observations shows that job numbers continued to be written in 1973 and in 1974. After that I don't see them on build sheets anymore. Actually, I've come to the conclusion that at the bottom of box 10 is the SCHED NO DATE and a pre-printed schedule number/job number along with an estimated production date. What I've seen that the job number on the build sheet will correspond to the three digit number scrawled on the passenger underneath floorpan.

Box 8 is a body number but I've not been able to correlate to assembly.

What wonderful work you are doing and so very helpful.

My original build sheet from the top of the tank was rescued, but very hard to read. Lots of dust and dirt and when I tried to brush a bit away in the corner, the ink came right off that cheap '70s paper.

It is now at a top document specialist who is taking the summer and painstaking removing the dirt spec by spec! When she has it finished I will forward you a copy for your records.

                Thanks for all your help.
