Splash shields - blacked out or not?

We the two metal splash shields covering toe boards on a C3 installed prior to engine bay blackout procedure and therefore black on the front side, or installed after and therefore unpainted showing gray phosphate on both sides?

    Thanks,

John Hinckley presented the St Louis Corvette Assembly process at national and his presentations are online at the Michigan NCRS Chapter website. I looked but did not see reference to the metal splash shields...but than I may have overlooked them. I suspect they may have been installed on the "Final" trim line. You'll find both the Powerpoint slides and the narrative. Check it out and let us know what you conclude.

Tom, although I'm sure many steps were equivalent between the mid-year (C2) assembly and the later cars (C3), I'm not sure that C2's had the splash shield that Tory is referring to. If I understand correctly, Tory is asking about the splash shields that cover the aluminum foil blanket used to insulate the cockpit under the driver and passengers floorboards/seat. They came in two pieces, the more forward part was plastic and the one attached to the rear of that part was metal. If so, C2 assembly line data is not applicable.
      Tory, is this correct?

        Tom -

The assembly process presentation focus was '63-'67 Corvettes, and they didn't have those shields Tory is asking about.

Troy, I know that my 72 splash shields were phosphate on both sides and appeared that they were never off pryer to my resto. There was black out on the toe boards so I would think not much would have changed between 72-75. Does your JM spell any thing out for the shields?

            Edward,

I don't have my books right now. They're over at the shop that's installing my restored motor. The shop is one that does lots of NCRS cars. I had my two splash shields cleaned and replated gray phosphate. When I visted Friday, I saw thay had been blacked out! The explanation was that they were installed prior to engine bay blackout and hence black on the front side and gray phosphate on the backside.

Attached two photos as they were.

I'll check my book when I go over Monday. But being a '75, the book is often light on details. I did look through John Hinkley's presentation prior to posting, but didn't see anything and since it was for mid-60's cars, I wasn't sure it would be acurate for my year anyway.

            Thanks,
            Tory

They were installed prior to blackout. As such, when removed you will see crayon marks such as A/C, P/B, and sometimes job numbers.

I actually have not seen those on later C3s...1977-82.

The two shields in question ran thru 1976.

Most original cars that I have viewed did not have engine compartment black out in this area. It would usually end at a point where the firewall would start to angle back. Not to say that they were all the same some I could see the upper area of the shields could have light to heavier black out paint. But in most cases I have not seen black out in this area.

I've attached two pics of my in-process 75. The paint job was done by a Corvette restorer. I can only say that the black out as shown "may" be an example of production in that the coverage goes down to where it starts angling rearward. This would mean that the upper part of the shields would get some black out.
