Re: Barrett Jackson 2011 so far

I found it very frustrating watching this B-J telecast. I usually like to hop around so I can keep up on the baseball race to the playoffs. It seemed like everytime I went to SPEED, they were either at a commercial, a human interest story (some big farmer collector or a Vegas magician's collection), or the best cars being held (phone bid) for some big named buyer's like Rick Hendrick. The one car that went for $85k, the poor floor buyer had to wait for an eternity before they dropped the gavel as they were trying to steer it to some other celebrity. In the end, he got a good buy and I was happy for him. The poor B-J girl had to hold her arm in the air for about 10 minutes until they gave in and dropped the gavel. That sucked!

Even Bob Varsha seemed a little put off as he was made to do the telecast when he'd rather have been covering the F-1 Qualifying.

I think the popularity of these big Auctions is going to drop off as other viewers like myself are going to lose interest due to the obvious staging and mis-representations of many of the cars (calling a 57 210 post a "Bel Air" just because it had the gold grill and trim, etc.). With Mecum too, it gets so frustrating when so many cars after cars fail to make reserve.

I think, as much as I love cars, I may just pass on these shows more in the future, specially when they keep me up past my bed time.

Next auction go to the B-J website, look for live streaming. Click on that and pick your choice of cameras.

The only broadcaster that has a clue of what he is looking at is Mike Joy. Steve Magnante (sp) is a clueless idiot. It did not take Hot Rod Magazine long to figure that out.

I agree! I think another factor that is effecting prices besides the economy, the misinformation from talking heads and publications is the fact that all of the auction houses have greatly expanded the amount of events they put on during a year. At first the expanded coverage helped but I think now it may be a liability. When there are only so many truly great cars out there and when you have an collector car auction just about every month, the auction houses have to take the lesser cars to fill all of those lots. I used look forward to every event where as now it is getting boring to see a lot of the same cars go through over and over again. There is no sense of urgency when there is a collector car auction all the time IMHO where in the past there were maybe four large events a year as opposed to over a dozen today.

I have to agree with you Steve. I follow auction results from all the major firms and see a decline in the overall quality of cars. There are still the high end cars, don't get me wrong, but daily drivers do not belong in collector car auctions. I'm sorry, but $3k cars detract from the sale.

I agree. An even bigger embarrassment was Alain de Cadenet. He may know English cars but he knows nothing about American iron. I'm glad they saw the light and gave him the hook.

Exactly! Maybe I am becoming a snob in my old age but watching a thousand daily drivers or krylon restos to see maybe a handful of great cars is not entertainment in my view. Fewer events with higher quality cars would make things more interesting. I am not knocking the auction houses, they are in it to make money and don't care where prices go as long as the added volume makes up for declining prices. I am sure they will continue to expand coverage until it effects the bottom line.

it just took longer for it to hit the states after it hit the rest of the world. with the economy of the US fueled 70% by consumer spending is does not look good. i have seen condos where we stay in Fla go from $45K to $185K and now back down to $70K and this is very telling about the economy.

I love going to the auctions in person. i just love seeing all of the different kinds of cars. i probably go to 4 auctions every year. I just went to the Monterrey auctions in September, and am going to check out the Mecum auction in Dallas in a few weeks.

prices are definitely reflecting the general mood of the economy. however, someone posted this earlier -- the great cars still draw big money. I saw it in Monterrey. and lots of cars are being bought by Europeans who have enjoyed a strong Euro relative to the US dollar for the past few years.

I also "wince" quite a lot when some of these cars sell, but i still enjoy watching them on TV or in person.

The Mecum Dallas auction has a couple of high end Corvettes there, the first being a real red on red 67 435 roadster with its original motor and the second being a black survivor 69 L88 coupe. I know that in 06/07 two real 67 red/red 435 convertibles sold privately in the 400k range and the third even higher than that. The Mecum car was owned by Roby Price and is a highly optioned car although the side exhaust was added. I am very curious to see what a great red on red 435 will bring in todays world as they are rarer than a black/black car.

Friday car sales looked soft to me. 72 LT-1 Coupe, 16000 miles, NCRS and Bloomington Gold certs and every piece of paperwork for only $37000. A 24000 mile 54 one family owner, for $54000. A 57 BLACK WIDOW repo, very nice body off frame Fuel injection, black / white grey interior sold $37000.

Saturday sales were not any better, except for resto mods. A nice 68 SHELBY 500KR Red convert sold for 160.

A yellow / white Jim Mangione 67 435 convert sold for 137. He has had that car since the 70's.

TOO MUCH GLITTER for me. And I am to old to climb under and inspect them close. Hell.....I am to old to drive them anymore. Mental ************, and it still feels good to look and laught.
