Was the dipstick installed at St. Louis or at the engine plant.

We need to be clear here so that we understand just which dipstick you have. There are two dipsticks that could be described as "long". One is the LONG HANDLE dipstick which is pictured on the far left of Terry's first post in this thread.

The other is the dipstick with a LONG BLADE but with a handle about the same size and configuration as the 65-E69 big block dipsticks.

          So, which is it?

What color plastic plug on the end of the handle loop?

Sorry Joe but the plug was missing when I bought the car in 87. I found and installed the "correct" plug as per the current TIM&JG.

OK, then what's the length of the blade section measured from the bottom of the bell to the tip of the blade? Is it about 24-5/16" or is it significantly shorter?

Joe, the bottom of the bell to the tip of the blade is 18-1/2".

                        April 2nd...the plot thickens.

It will be interesting to see if there are enough data points to show the sticks, like Paul's, were used earlier on with AC and, perhaps, on very late non AC cars.

It's a GM #3925520 and would have had a white plastic plug.

FWIW: The 1969 AIM UPC L36, Sheet A5 shows:

Gauge Asm 3925520 changed to 3959158 on 7-22-68.

We think 3925520 is my photos 3 & 4 in post 1 above, and that 3959158 is photos 1 & 2 in that post. If I would have been sure of their order of appearance I would have numbered them differently -- but hindsight is 20/20.

We know that the changer date shown in the AIMs represents the date the drawing was changed and does not tell us too much about the date the item changed on the assembly line.

I still would like to narrow down the change point, if there is one, on the assembly line in St Louis -- so we need more data, please. Right now we will only be able to say "early/late" in the TIM&JG, and we know how much y'all love those terms.

Any one of these guys on the inside have the print? That will get you real close.

There is no time for that. We are in the final stages of wrapping up the wording of the 1968-69 manual at this time. Where we are on dipsticks in the next few days is where we will be for the next X years.

I am not sure the print(s) will help much anyway. The release date still will not tell us when the assembly line change was implemented.
