    Re: 1970 LT-1 Ontario Orange: Owner's comments

I just now got a chance to read this forum regarding some of the issue with my early LT1. I am still learning about my car. From articles I read it appeared that the 70 LT1s did not come with power steering because of the larger oil pan. However, those articles could have stated that the early cars did not come with p/s and I may have miss inturpeted them. My trim plate does have the paint code 991, but I have not seen or heard of another 70 Corvette painted this color. If there is one, then my car has a long lost sister or brother. It would be interesting to find another one and see what the production date is. Those color plates are really cool. I would love to see them. When I get to the point to have the car painted I would really like to borrow the plate to make sure it is the correct Ontario Orange.

I will have the plates with me at Kissimmee this week if the car is operational and you can drive to the meet we could get a first hand look at the car and the paint plate together. The paint is only original once so we can see if the color does match the 991 number or not and after the repaint all that information is lost. So if it is possible to bring it to the meet let us know we all would be interested in the out come or if you are close to Kissimmee we could drive over to the cars location. If and when you repaint the car the paint plate know as a paint standard would be available to help you match the finish and color. Plus if you can get it to the meet Terry might be interested to use the car for part of his school but that is his decision not mine you would have to register the car. Speaking for myself and others we are all here to learn more about the cars we love and enjoy and cars like yours draws us in deeper.

Was the no power steering for 70 LT1's only? I bought a 71 LT1 new and it had power steering. Rick

The power steering option was added in later 1970 LT-1 models different engine suffix code all 1971 and later LT-1's could have this option Due to the 5 qt pan was standard. You could add the 6 qt as an over the counter part from the dealer if you had no power steering.

A couple of things. I knew that this car existed many many years ago, but it never surfaced. That was until Barry brought it to Old Town several years ago after acquiring it. I believe this is the car that was on the cover of Corvette News. As for you non believers that a Ontario Orange Corvette did not exist in 1970, guess again, because it did. Just one that I know of. Also FYI - Out of all the Corvettes I have owned over the years, I had a 1970 L-46 Bronze coupe with P/S and a 5 quart oil pan. Also - Barry has owned or still does a Riverside Gold convertible small block with low miles. Nice car.

There has been one thing that I have learned here Never say never. We had a 1972 painted Black with documentation from GM at London Canada and at the National this past year in Bowtie. With that said we can not say no none were produced or never happened if we do we may have to retract the statement later. I also saw this car a few years ago like Ron said at the Florida meet wish I would have put my paint standard next to it then.

I said that there were no production 70 orange corvettes. I never said there were none. We know 006 was orange it is on the cover of Corvette News which I have. I agree also that if had the right connections you could get any color. My point was that I don't beleave any were painted orange as a stock color & all were bronze.

If you take a look at the Corvette News issue following the one with the Ontario Orange car on the cover there is a story about the joys of working in the candy store. I even think that, or something close to it, is the title of the story. That article mentiones the ontario Orange Corvette as well as Power Steering for the LT1s.

As to the color of that car. I don't think you can tell much from the cover shot. As I remember it is a night time picture taken with a lot of snow around. Given the transparency and printing process that color could be the Ontario Orange we know or some other shade. We will never know.
