    Removing Chrome??

Have an orig '57 fan shroud that was chromed many, many years ago. How can I take the chrome off or should I just sand and paint? Thanks.

take it to your local chrome plating shop, and ask them to strip it.
You will get it back nice, clean and bare metal, ready to prime and paint.

The nearest chrome plater is about 2 hours drive away. Any way to do it myself?

I don't think the chrome application or chrome removal process is suitable for a do it yourselfer to tackle.
As an alternative, I have access to a chrome shop that I have used 100s of times over the last 40 years. I go into the back myself and work with metals, often stripping, polishing and plating the parts myself. I will make you an offer; if you want to pack up the shroud and ship it to me, along with a shipping label to return it to you, and include enough money to pay to return, and another $60 or so to pay the shop, I will strip the shroud for you. And then pack it and ship it back to you.
Send me a PM if you want to take me up on it.

          John,
I think this decision depends on what you intend to do with the car. If it is a correct car, except for the chrome plating; get it stripped. If on the other hand it is a nice driver; sand and paint it.
I sanded and painted some parts in the engine compartment of my 57 several years ago and have not had any problems with peeling or other signs that chrome plated metal is underneath.
