John:
Since no one has responded yet, I'll give it a shot.
First and formost, honesty will go a long way toward making a good deal. Noting any deficiencies not in the ad may save someone a trip. Since you are asking in this NCRS website, I would say to have a lot of photos available and if numbers matching, close ups of the pad and other key dates or hard to find parts. Callers are going to want to know what history you have on the car. Since interested callers could be many miles away, I would have the photos and any documentation ready to be e-mailed to propective buyers. Expect someone may have someone local to you to inspect the car for them. If you have access to alift, that would be great.
When you get calls that do not ask the right questions and are anxious to buy your car without seeing it, RUN AWAY!! Someone wanting to send you a cashiers check and have the car picked up, RUN AWAY FASTER. A valid buyer will likely want to see the car before tranferring funds. You must be very careful about payment these days. Anything other than cash in hand or a cashiers check that can be CASHED locally should raise a flag and you should proceed with caution.
Sometimes you may have to trust someone by taking a check but there are ways to confirm funds. I would not let the title and car go until all cash is in hand. I did sell one car and had the funds wire transferred into my account. It was a simple procedure that I confirmed where the money was coming from. Nothing ever beats a face to face meeting at a bank, theirs or yours.
Sorry to be so negative because there are so many honest people out there. They too now understand what can happen and in fact buyers are really targeted with scams as well. However, you don't want to meet up with one that is not and lose your car. There seems to be a new scam everyday.
Good luck. I love a deal where both the buyer and seller walk away pleased.
I'm sure others will post their opinions- Top

Re: need advice when selling a vette
Bob,
As John said be honest.
As far as payment goes, the only totally safe way to recieve payment is by a wire transfer or cash.
With wire transfer open a new savings account and use it only for the one transaction. I do this since you will have to provide the buyer with the account number along with a routing number.
With cash be sure to validate the bills with a pen which will identify counterfiet bills.
Cashier checks, bank checks and credit union checks can be absolutely useless.
In this day and age, buyer beware needs to be expanded to SELLER BEWARE also.- Top

Re: need advice when selling a vette
John,
I'm sure that you have a good reason for selling your car, but now is not the best time. The market is down and you'll get less money for it. Be sure to do your research on fair market values and set your minimum. If you don't sell it at first try different venues. Driveline is not the best advertising venue, there are many others that reach a far greater audience.
