Different part numbered lifters were used for 1965 L-78 versus LS-6 (i.e. the only 454 with mechanical lifters) but there was no significant difference in the lifters used for either.

I have a photo here somewhere of the valve covers removed from 1966 VIN 4XX. 400 hp car with no drippers.

Gee Dickey, that is really a rare 66 BB. No drippers and 400HP to boot!!!

How about a 390HP with no drippers big boy? And you accuse me of having Part-Timers.

I have been under the same impression as you. I pulled down my copy of "State of the Art" and checked out the engine rebuild on 14,971. The valve covers are smooth and I'm sure Dave didn't sand them smooth. Looks like no drippers on that 396.

          Joe,

Sorry it took so long to reply but I've been trying to remember if the covers on the car after restoration are actually the originals. I definitely remember that they were chrome (yes, as delivered new) but I also remember that someone installed aftermarket breathers on each cover.
I seem to remember that I changed the covers, and if I did, I probably would have used a set from a beater 396 car that we had at that time.

You do have part timers ya old goat. Don't ya remember the early '66's were 400 hp for hydraulics and 450 hp for solids. Note I said VIN 4XX, like in 400

OK, I'm an old goat but I still don't remember any 390HP cars tagged as 400HP's. Do remember the 425HP's being tagged as 450HP's! Gonna check out Noland's book. It's the Bible you know!!!!

PS. OK, the Bible says the 427 was rated at 400HP and later downgraded to 390HP. But did I ever see a 1966 with a 400HP designation. Hell NO! So that means it didn't happen!
