'64 fuel tank stencil details needed

    Hello,
Can anyone help me with the correct location, placement, content and color for the fuel tank stencil on a '64 regular tank car? I'm doing a frame-off and have somehow misplaced the instructions for correctly stenciling the new tank I'm installing. I already have the Quanta stencil kit, but no instructions. The marks on the old tank are long gone. Thanks.

My original had only one ink stamp on it.....in 3" black letters........ST. LOUIS MO

It must have been the top tank on a pallet and labeled for shipment.

        Jeff,
I don't exactly remember why, but when I restored my 64 I came to the conclusion that the tank should not have a stencil. I like stenciled numbers where they should be so I don't think I came to this decision easily. When I get home tonight I will go through my records and see if I can figure it out.

The stencil on my 65 is on the drivers side and is upside down centered on the upper half of the tank. The "St. Louis" and the part number are "center justified".

            Jeff -

Here's a rack of 1964 tanks on the receiving dock at St. Louis.

John, It looks like they were put wherever the guy doing the job decided to put them? They were not all the same? And he put it on either end. Mike

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback on this subject. Am I now to assume from all the info that the stencil can be found on either end of the tank, either on the top or bottom section and either right side up or upside down? I also assume the stencil should contain only "St. Louis" and a part number, sprayed with black paint. Since this is not covered in the judging manual, I further assume the judges don't look for this or deduct points for a missing stencil. ??

Re: '64 fuel tank stencil details needed

If you look more closely it seems that all the stencils are in the same location and probably on both ends of the tanks. We can tell that there are views of both ends of the tanks. The flange formed by the 2 halves (upper and lower) of the tank are bent down on both rear corners. This area forms a triangle. It can be clearly seen on the tank third row up, right end. On this tank you are seeing the right end (passenger side) of the tank with the rear (of the car) to the left and the front to the right. There seems to be a stencil on this end of this tank.

For the tank at the upper right corner of the pallet you are seeing the left end of the tank as it would be sitting on the frame/car. You would be looking at the tank from the left (driver's) side. The front of the car would be to the left and the rear to the right. The "triangle" is on the right on this tank and is bent down. Now by finding the "triangle" you can orient all of the other tanks. The tank in the center, second row from the bottom has a legible stencil. It appears that the stencil should be upside down and on both ends of the tank (unless there is some reason to think that the tanks were placed on the pallet in a manner to make all stencils visible with some on one end and others on the opposite end) and on the bottom half of the tank.

                  Doug

while we are on topic, did all years recieve these types of stencils on the gas tank?
