    62 340 HP timing cover/pointer

2 questions about the 340HP timing cover and pointer for a 62 340 HP.

    1. Can someone please post a picture of a timing cover and pointer?
    2. I know that the pointers between the 340 HP and 300HP are different, however, is the timing cover the same?

    Thanks,

    Tony

The timing cover is the same for all 1962 Corvette small blocks, only the pointer differs.

Joe - is that same for 63(i.e. that covers are the same but pointers are not)? Thanks

        Tony.

The 62 340 hp timing cover and pointer is the same as the 63 piece shown on the left side of this picture.

I think the pointer, or timing plate, is the same for all 63 engines. However, the location on the timing chain cover is different for the 8" balancer.

Actually, the timing marks on the pointer/plate for the 8" balancer for 62, 63 and early 64 were actually those used for the 6" balancer and should be spaced differently. There should be a wider gap between marks. The problem was corrected in early 1964.

            Michael;

Are you saying that the timing marks on a 63 SHP are wrong? If so, what if any correction factor should we be using. I've checked my TDC mark for cyl. #1 on mine and it is dead on, but where am I at when I lock in the timing at + 10 or + 12 degrees from the "0" mark?

                Stu,

This was covered extensively a couple of years ago when Michael enlighten us here on the TDB. From Bob's pic you can see that 14 degrees on your tab really equals only 10 degrees. If you want 12 degrees, time so the mark is right off the end of your tab.

WOW! Sorry I missed that, but it must have been before I discovered the TDB. Very good to know as it helps explain why I never had any spark knock, even with my aggressive advance curve of my distributor (done on a Sun Machine). I always thought it was due to my Max 2000 blend and possibly lower C.R. (double head gaskets) as Duke and others have brought out (mine passes the feeler gauge test though).

Good information. Thanks Michael and Tracy.

Mike, Here are pictures from the timing tab on my 1963 300hp engine.

It's a little different in that it does not have the angle cut at the top FWIW, I don't know why the angle cut is used on the tab.

Use a dial back timing light to dial in 38 degrees (VAC disconnected) at engine speed greater than where the centrifugal is all in.

If it doesn't detonate, you should have a pretty optimized spark advance map, and you'll probably feel the difference.

I guess my excuse for not knowing about this is the fact that in 1962 my racing days were over as Uncle Sam said I'd better serve or he'd make me. I bought the 63 while in the service and had little time to get to know it as I took delivery in August, then left for SEA in November. I think I only had it over to the hobby shop at White Sands a couple of times just to wash it. It was into storage then until 1965, out for 2 years, and then back again in early 1967 until 1971. I just was out of touch until then and began my acquaintance with it by tuning it like a SHP 283, which was my last experience.
