C3 Rear storage jack tray: How deep?

Anyone know when GM moved from deep 6.25" jack storage trays to the shallower 5.5" ones? Some say '74, others say '76. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Re: C3 Rear storage jack tray: How deep?

I had a deep tray that appeared to have an original date of 74. Interestingly, it also did not have the black "nesting" band under the lip like most earlier deep trays.

I also have a shallow tray that appears to have an original date of 75.

OK, we might be getting closer from what you provided. Your 3/6/74 is a '74 tray and it's deep. Your 11/17/75 is a '76 tray and it's shallow.

So '74 and earlier is deep and '76 and later is shallow. What about '75??

      Can anybody add to this?

Tory, as I said I believe my shallow tray is dated 75, not 76.

So if the dates on my trays are original, it seems like at least some 74s got deep trays, and at least some 75s got shallow trays.

Your '75 dated tray is November of '75 which is the '76 model year.

My bad, I didn't think of that.

Your info is great. So, assuming your parts are correct, and there's no reason to think otherwise, we would then believe:

'74 and earlier years are deep and '76 and later are shallow.

Seems the change happened somewhere between late-'74 and early-'76 model years, but we need more dates to narrow it down.

              Still no input for '75.

Do you have any part numbers for your two trays. Or Assembly manuals for these years?

Tory I don't have any AIMs for these years, but I did find this informative old thread that includes part numbers for the various years, and may answer your question:

                  Pat,

We're having a nice chat, just the two of us, huh? Thanks for the thread. Interesting. Everyone sure knows a bunch up to about '73 or so. Even Joe Lucia wasn't clear about '75. It seems by the end of the thread there was the feeling that #333758 was a deep box and used through '75. That would correspond with the dates of your two boxes.

Starting to look like '74 and '75 were deep and the shallow boxes started with the '76 model year, since your shallow box is dated 11/17/75.

Let's see who else has info.

                  Thanks,
                  Tory

                    Tory:

                    I have a 74 and my wife has a 75 (Bowtie- 8400 miles)

                    74: 6.25 inches deep dated 3-23-74

                    75: 5.5 inches deep dated 5-27-75

With the 75 built late in the model year, we need to hear from 75 owners with early build dates.

Re: C3 Rear storage jack tray: How deep?

I have been restoring these boxes and other automotive items for close to twenty years. I use a data base and store the information on each item I do. As of todays date all the boxes which I have reflocked are the deep ones. The latest date that I have seen was June 1976 and it was 6 1/4 inches deep. The Judging manual states that the 75-76 are 6 1/4 and the 77 are 5 1/4 inches. There can be a running change during the year where both boxes were used. A good example would be the 1968 boxes which were 6 1/4 inches deep and flat on all four sides and the top lip about 3/8 inch was present on all four sides. Sometime in 1968 the rear lip was removed by just cutting it off. The 1968 box was used in some early 1969 until they ran out of them. The recess was placed into the front of the box so it would clear the latch. Most boxes do not have a date code and there are no part numbers on the boxes. Have one number which may be part number 5082669#. It is stamped on the box with the number sign after it.

Hey Tory, This tray came out of my April 75 car, It is the 5 1/2 deep tray. I cannot decipher the date code but expect it is sometime in calendar year 1974.

                            See the attached pic.

Re: C3 Rear storage jack tray: How deep?

We could be narrowing this down:

                              Brian Jan. build = 6.25"
                              Al April build = 5.50"
                              Dolores ? build = 5.50" Box dated May '75

Don: What's the build date of your car?
Al: Could your date be 3rd shift on August 2, 1974?
Brian: Does your box have a date?
Anybody: Is the part number for '75 #362962?

Given the above, it seems like early '75 may have deep boxes and late '75 changed to shallower boxes.

                              Getting interesting!!
