    64 four speed Muncie advice

If you read my previous post regarding my rear end, you can see I am not having a very good week. Next issue: I have an excessive noise (whinning) coming from my 4 speed Muncie transmission. I had it 'professionally' rebuilt by a guy in San Diego. I told him to spare nothing and make it right. It sat in my garage for about 3 years until I was ready for it. After installing it with all new parts, clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, pilot bearing etc. it sounds like the milk truck, whinning in all gears with the possible exception of 4th. Ok.....so then upon recommendation of a friend, I had a local transmission guy pull it back out and told him to check it out. He found metal shavings and all kinds of bad stuff and so he replaced parts and 'fixed it'. Well, it shifts great (always did) but it still whines as before. I can't stand it...I only want to hear my exhaust note, not my tranny. I know something is not right. My 2nd tranny guy is willing to look at it again, but I'm wondering if you all know a GREAT Muncie guy I can ship this to in order to get it right once and for all! Any comments will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Tim

Generally, rebuilding a Muncie (or BW T-10, for that matter) is a pretty straight-forward operation. There are no "adjustments" and only one selective fit shim (snap ring) involved. If parts are excessively worn, that needs to be recognized by the rebuilder and those parts replaced.

It's not uncommon for a rebuilt transmission to be somewhat less than "perfect" or "as-new". That's because a rebuilt transmission is a mixture of new and worn parts. After all, there's going to be SOME wear on ALL of the parts, but not all of the parts are going to be replaced. However, the final product should be well within acceptable standards. In your case, all I can figure is that some parts that needed to be replaced were not replaced. Either that or your expectation of how quiet the transmission should be is unrealistic.

In any event, I always recommend that a Muncie or BW 4 speed be rebuilt by someone well experienced with those, particular transmissions and not a transmission "generalist".

Larry Fisher at D&L Transmissions is a person with long experience in Muncie and T-10 service. So, is Tom Parsons who frequents this board and Ed Hartnett in PA.

      Tim,

The cluster gear is the one that works in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 4th is a straight line to the driveshaft.

Sounds to me like the problem may be there.

I did these for years also and find that rebuilders do not inspect some parts very well for wear.

The inside of the cluster is one place that is skipped by a novice rebuilder and it is a bearing surface for more roller bearings than one can imagine.

As Joe said it is a mixture of partially worn parts but you can make it like new again with the right parts.

The parts are not as expencive as you think to do one right.

Yes, it is possible that the problem resides in the cluster gear. When a Muncie is rebuilt, the cluster gear bore needs to be inspected as best as one can. ALL of the needle bearings need to be replaced. And, ALL of the needle bearings need to be installed and maintained in position. The latter is a "failure point" for the inexperienced or careless.

          Joe,
Right you are, I have a loading shaft that stays in the cluster that is about 1" shorter and it holds every thing in place.

I lower the cluster in the trans with the loading shaft, then when I push the cluster shaft thru my loading shaft exits the trans.

I also shorten the long cluster spacer and add 2 more rows of roller bearings for racing.

It was believed that the cluster would flex when shifted into 2nd & 3rd at the drag strip.

I will say this for the non believers, we stopped cleaning the teeth of the cluster with that mod.
