    '57 Starter Motor

Two questions regarding the '57 starter motor on a PG-equiped car....

    1) There are two threaded rods that run through the starter body and protude through the flat, end plate. Should the longer of the two rods be on the top (nearest to the solenoid..) or should it be on the bottom? It's my understanding that the starter brace bolts to the longer rod..... Is that true....?
    2) The AIM shows the starter brace bolting to the block..... If this is the case, where is the bolt hole in the block for this brace to attach....? Does it attach to one of the pan bolts.....?

Does anyone have any pictures of this configuration....?

    thanks

The starter through bolt with the threaded extension goes toward the top of the starter. The starter brace does attach to this extension.

I do not recollect where the brace attaches to the block on a 1957 application. However, if you obtain the correct brace and test mount it, it will clue you as to just where it attaches.

      Joe....

thanks for the quick response...... I think the guy who rebuilt the starter reversed the two rods - he put the long one on the bottom..... that's why it didn't makes sense....

I found the hole I was looking for..... it's right between the "cressant" and uses the same size bolt.... It's in the same spot as on the 327 engine....

      thanks

        Garry -

At the top end of the starter brace, you'll find a raised boss on the block with a tapped hole in it - that attachment takes a 5/16"-18 x 1/2" bolt.

John, did the image come from the 1957 AIM? I have a 1960 with PG and never found an AIM page with a reference to the bracket. Once I had the bracket, it was easy to figure out where it mounted to the block.

There is an area on that same side of the block with a triangle configuration of threaded bosses. What was the triad of threaded holes designed for?

            Joe -

I don't recall which year AIM that illustration came from.

The triangular group of threaded bosses on both sides of the block started in 1958 - they're for the passenger car side engine mounts (and '63-up Corvettes).
