I have stripped the top off my 1971 roadster and noticed that there were only three bolts securing the soft top frame to the car. Also, one of the bolts was loose and not tightened. After removing the top frame, I checked the area where the frame is mounted. I found out that two of the four holes that the top is mounted to, are stripped out. The stripped holes are not on the same side. What can I do to replace or repair these?? Is there an oversize bolt that I can use? Can I remove the threaded pieces from inside the cage they are mounted in? Please advise as I am stumped on how to proceed. Thanks.

I don't know of a way to remove the thread plates, although there may be a way. In any event, I think the easiest way to repair this problem is to install a thread repair without the need to remove the plate. You could use a commonly available Heli-Coil repair but for this sort of situation, I'd go with a Thread-Sert. You can obtain these from McMaster-Carr as well as other sources. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1971 convertible top frame mounting
I was able to put a nut on the bolt that stuck through the plate. The bolts were fine thread and longer than they needed to be. It is very easy to cross thread the fine thread bolts.Lyle

Re: 1971 convertible top frame mounting
FWIW, I'd recommend repairing/restoring the stripped threads - then using the original sized bolt - over drilling out and using a larger bolt. The larger bolt will present as an "odd" bolt head vs the others. Don't ask me how I know"It was like that when I got it". Fixed now....
