meets the spec for use in the new corvette LS engines so oil changes should be cheaper than using mobil 1.

Re: new GM oil DEXOS 1
I always find it extremely irritating when a mfg. requires their own specification fluid rather than an industry standard (like API), especially when they are the only one who sells it, and you have to pay through the nose.
I remember going around and around with Mercedes Benz about "Mercedes Benz coolant". What the heck is it?
It took over 10 years for me to find out, but it turns out it's Zerex G-05, or, rather, Zerex G-05 is a brand that was introduced when the original patents ran out. Back before Ford and Chrysler adopted it (Chrysler after the ill-fated merger with Diamler-Benz), MB was the only mfg. that used it in the US, and it turns out it's a very good coolant and is perfect for vintage cars because some of the modern OAT technologies don't protect solder as well, and G-05 won't clog up the radiator tubes like "green".
Once it was widely recommended and off-patent, commercial clones began to show up like Zerex G-05.
So what we can now buy commercially as Zerex G-05 has been around since at least the early eighties, and I think it was originally developed by BASF, possibly in a joint venture with DB.

That's correct - my brother-in-law was the Coolant Laboratory Supervisor (now retired) at BASF (formerly Wyandotte Chemical) in Wyandotte, Michigan, and has several jointly-held patents on the G-05 formulation and production process.- Top

Re: new GM oil DEXOS 1
I've been wondering about this new oil thing for a while now too. Here's an interesting tidbit for you all. I went back in the showroom this morning and picked out two new 2012 Grand Sport coupes. One with a 6 speed manual with the "hand built" LS3 and dry sump system. The other one was an automatic coupe that is not available with dry sump. The oil caps were different. Both cars were built the same week.
Mobil 1 cap on the dry sump car and DEXOS cap on the standard system car. Interesting.
I have emailed a contact in the plant to clear up some questions I have regarding this. I will let you know what I find out.Tom Hendricks

Re: new GM oil DEXOS 1
Interesting thread...reading this, I had to check my 2012 Z06 (LS7) which I picked up from Hendrick this past Tuesday and drove it the 700 miles home to Long Island...I built the engine on July 20th in Wixom and the car came off the assembly line on Thursday the 18th of August...and it has the Mobil 1 cap as pictured on the dry sump in Tom's post...Do we need to start documenting the different caps now for future judging in 15 yrs!- Top
