    Exhaust Manifold Restoration

I will one day take the exhaust manifolds off my '65sb, sandblast and then repaint. What is the best product to use that will stay on the manifolds? Long Island Corv. has a high temp primer and paint that I used before which required 'cooking' in a oven (thinking I could get away with it, I used the house oven when the wife was gone-the first time she used the oven after that it stunk the entire house up-won't try that again). POR makes a high temp product. Thoughts? Could be that ncrs doesn't won't any paint on them. Thanks.

I used VHT on my 1960 turned out very well. Did run them i the oven as they suggested. they have about 2000 miles on them since it was done and no deterioration...... I was greeted with you want to put what in the oven, so thinking that I would have other items that need cooking I found a oven on Craigs list that was like new but had a broken ceramic top $25 now I get to cook any part I want.

For small parts I use an old toaster oven. Doesn't take up much space, and it was free.

For my manifolds I blasted them and used POR15 paint. They look very good. While they would not completely fit in the oven, I did one end and then turned them around.

It would like very much to stay married, so the kitchen oven was not an option. -Dan-

          Mike,

Have you considered sending them to Jerry MacNeish? He will put a thin coat of aluminum on the outside - no more surface rust ever! He supplies you with two cans of spray paint. I hear it holds up very well. John Hinckley has them on his Camaro. I had mine done, but the engine has not been run yet. It will probably take a minor deduction in judging, but I figure that's a small price to pay.

Alton, The exhaust manifold coating depends on the year of the car and the size engine.

Has anyone ever tried coetings like some places use on headers? One place comes to mind Jet Hot Coatings I will be doing my manifolds soon, also & I pass by this place in NC on my weekly commute to TN. I don't mind a small deduct, if it keeps the manifolds rust free

The Jerry MacNeish solution is the best solution as far as I'm concerned. It's not dirt cheap and it takes awhile to get turnaround, but it's the best solution.

They'll cure from engine heat, so there's no real need to heat cure them before that inevitably comes to pass.

However, if one wants to pre-cure, a covered gas barbecue grille will work very nicely and is usually large enough to accommodate any exhaust manifold.

Ya, your right Joe. But pre-baking them prevents them from getting marked up before the engine is run. Good idea on the barbeque. -Dan-

On every car I've restored, I glass bead them and then spray with high-temp. cast blast. Then ones on my 60 were done 25 years ago and they still look great.

I glass beaded the rust off of my 67 BB exhaust manifolds in 1983 and then sprayed them with 1200 deg cast blast paint. They still great!!!!
