    1967 AIM: old style Fuel Pump 6440083 for cars with C60 and/or L79?? (C60-C2, L79-A2)

1967 Assembly Manual (also 1966 AIM):
In the 1967 AIM, UPC C60-C2, RH side, under optional parts that install the same as regular production, is listed 6440083 ASM - PUMP. (the 1966 AIM also shows the same p/n in C60-C2)

UPC L79-A2 (1966 & 1967) shows that a different "Fuel & Vacuum Pump" was used with RPO L79, installed the same as regular production, but does not specify a GM part number (says "See parts list or bill of materials for part numbers.")

    Noland Adams' book says:
"For 1964, L76 and L84 engines had a higher output fuel pump, part number 6440083. Base pumps were rated at 5.25 to 6.5 psi at 1800 rpm, the 6440083 pump was rated at 6 to 7.5 psi at 1800 rpm." (p. 231)

"The 1966 C60 fuel pump was a high output unit, part number 6440083. This unit was also used with the L79 engine." (p. 339)

    Judging Guides, P&As:
The 1966 JG confirms the higher output 6440083 Fuel Pump for L79 (no mention of usage with C60). The 1967 JG does not mention a different fuel pump for C60 or L79. The 1966 P&A references 6440083 being used from 64-66 "w/F.I., Sp. H/Per., C.A.C.". The 1967 and newer P&As say the same thing (model year 1964-66 usage), but the omission of 1967 model year usage is not conclusive, since many original production parts used in 1967 are omitted in the 1967+ P&As, showing 1966 as the last year of usage.

A search of the TDB archives for p/n 6440083 turned up nothing in relation to 1967 small blocks, but the 1967 AIM says this fuel pump was used in 1967 with the same RPOs as 1966.

Was the higher output 6440083 Fuel Pump original equipment on a 1967 SB, with C60 or L79 (or with both C60 and L79)?

Well, you wake up in the mornin', you hear the work bell ring
And they march you to the table, to see the same old thing
Ain't no food upon the table, and no pork up in the pan
But you better not complain, boy, you get in trouble with the man.

Let the Midnight Special, shine a light on me

Hey, any of you guys know the story behind the 6440083 Fuel Pump on a '67 small block with C60 and/or L79?

The 1967 AIM I have calls out 6440433 FUEL PUMP (UPC 6, SHEET C1) and the October 1, 1966 Chevrolet P&A 30 Revised I have shows

      67 CORVETTE (327) ............. 6416509

It was even more expensive than the fuel pump for the 427. I alway knew that parts for those BIG BLOCK delete Corvettes were more expensive.

6416509 is the 40433 Fuel Pump (that is what the GM AC New FUEL PUMP box indicates) which is as far as I know is also the 6440433 Fuel Pump.

I did not find any call out in the C60 Section of my AIM for another Fuel Pump for the 327 engine.

        Hi Pete,

Thanks very much for the reply. The first picture below has arrows pointing to the call out for the 6440083 Fuel Pump on UPC C60-C2 of the 1967 AIM (327 engine).

The second picture is from the October 1966 printing of the P&A (same info as listed in the 1965 and 1967 printings) referencing the 6440083 Fuel Pump repair kit, applicable for 1964-66 Corvettes with high performance small block and/or Car Air Conditioning.

I'm not hallucinating the GM 6440083 Fuel Pump Asm. call-out in the 1967 AIM on UPC C60-C2, right? It has big RED arrows pointing right at it in the picture at the bottom of the previous post.

It sure looks big as life

Wouldn't a higher psi fuel pump be just as important for an L79 and/or C60 in 1967, if it was important for the same RPOs in 1966?

The "call outs" being referred to are for the L-79 ENGINE ASSEMBLY (AS SHIPPED) so as shipped the L-79 ENG ASM includes or comes with the various items on that list including the 6440083 ASM-PUMP. Reference in the 67 CORVETTE AIM to the "327" ENGINE are for the Base 327 Engine. The parts to be added and installed on Base 327 ENGINE and the L-79 ENGINE are those "called out" in UPC C60, SHEET C2, i.e., numbers 1 thru 10 and none of those parts include a fuel pump. My read is per UPC C60, SHEET C2 there is "no call" out for fuel pump so there would be no fuel pump change made in Production to the Base 327 ENGINE when C60 was added.

The 6440083 fuel pump was used on the L-79 and other Hi-Performance 327 engines for performance requirements not because of air conditioning and I would not expect my Base 327 ENGINE with C60 would perform any better or at least I couldn't tell if it did if the 6440083 fuel pump was installed in place of the 40433 fuel pump. If I am understanding you correctly, if I have a factory installed L79 engine in 1967, then it came with the old-style (re-buildable) 6440083 fuel pump from the factory, and should be restored as such?

I have not found any information about this anywhere before regarding the 1967 model year. It's completely new (and unexpected) information to me, so I wanted to be sure!

              Thanks Pete!

Scott - That's what the 67 AIM "calls out" and I checked the 1966 NCRS TIM&JG and it indicates the 6440083 is the fuel pump for the L79, 350 hp engine; but in checking 9. FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM in the 1967 NCRS TIM&JG the only fuel pump that is mentioned is the 6440433. While I would think the 67 L-79 would be set up similar to previous Production years L-79s, but I don't find any information to confirm that. Inquiring minds want to know. Pete

I had better print this Thread, the L79-A2 page and the C60-C2 page from the 1967 AIM and take them with me for Judging. Under "L79" on the C60-C2 page it also lists unique assembly pipes and connectors with the fuel pump:

                  3855858 ASM - PIPE
                  6440083 ASM - PUMP
                  3855147 ASM - CONNECTOR
                  3833471 ASM - PIPE

I'm guessing these are needed because of different fittings/connections and/or orientations of fittings on the 6440083 fuel pump compared to the standard (non-rebuildable) 6440433 fuel pump.

Does anyone know of any further documentation for this fuel pump application on a '67 L79? None of the vendors are aware of it or list the 6440083 as applicable to '67 under any RPO, and I don't think most judges will expect to see the 6440083 fuel pump on any '67.

                      Pete & Scott -

Let me try and clarify what that sheet (C60, C2) says. Items 1 through 10 are added (or substituted for base engine parts) with C60; the engine "as shipped" doesn't include any of the parts listed below item #11 - those parts were all added at St. Louis.

There's a new part number for the 300hp engine assembly (3878291) and for the 350hp engine assembly (3866995) for use with C60 due to unique positioning of the water pump pulley hub, and the 40083 fuel pump and lines are also called out in that list for use with C60, all of which "assemble same as production". The 3855147 connector was required at the inlet fitting of the 40083 fuel pump; the 40433 pump didn't need it.

Don't know why that list includes the 6419506 air cleaner for C60 - I didn't think C60 changed it.

If you look at L-79, sheet A2, the non-illustrated parts listing under UPC 6M-4 shows a unique fuel pump for usage with L-79; that part is listed in the Engineering Parts List or Bill of Material, which we don't have, but it says that the base engine fuel pump (40433) was replaced with a different one with L-79, and the only other pump we know about in '67 was the 40083.

What all that boils down to is that the 40083 fuel pump is called out for usage with C60, and with L-79. Why was it specified for use with C60? I don't know.

                        John,

The 3855147 connector is a fuel pump connector. I posted a photo of one in my post yesterday @ 1:03 PM.

The 3891523 vacuum connector has one 1/4" tube (AC or A.T.). The 3891526 vacuum connector has two 1/4" tubes (AC with A.T.).

That's correct - it was used on the inlet side of the 40083 pump for the hose from the main line on the frame; the 40433 pump used on the 300hp non-A/C base engine didn't need it, as the inlet hose nipple was an integral part of the pump crimped lower cover. That further confirms use of the 40083 pump with A/C. I revised my previous post to correct usage of the connector.

Thanks very much for the explanation, this is very interesting (to me!). This looks like something that should be updated for the next 1967 Judging Guide. I have not found the 6440083 Fuel Pump referenced with regard to any 1967 Corvette, L79 or C60 (or both) in the current '67 JG.

I think I have figured out most of the other associated parts for a 1967 Corvette with L79 and/or C60, but not sure about this one:

                              3855858 Pipe Asm.
This part number I have not found in any of the AIMs, and I did not see it in any of the P&As. I suspect it is a Production Only part number for the small block high performance fuel line from the Carburetor to the Fuel Pump, without external fuel filter.

If so, I think the GM Service Replacement p/n is 3882837. This part number is applicable for 1966-1968 Corvette w/Sp. H/Per. (327).

                              Is this correct?
