    1967 Decklid Adjustment

At Carlisle this year I purchased a new soft weatherstrip for the decklid on my 67 convertible. The stiff GM rubber never let the lid sit flush so I removed it to install the new soft rubber. The lid sits high in the center peak line and there is currently what looks like a 1/32" shim on each front bolt.

After looking at my 67 AIM a 3755670 shim (8 REQD) is called out and this is different then the (AS REQD) spec in other AIM's. Can anyone tell me what this shim looks like because the thin shim that's there now looks like a front end shim.

My 1963 AIM shows this shim as the same part # as the hinge assembly shim but I think the bolt is larger so that can't be correct. Looks like I need a larger shim in the front bolt position to change the angle some.

    Tim,

Just took a look at my 67 deck lid which has never been off the car, and has its original weatherstrip. At the drivers side hinge there is only one shim that I can see and it is on the rear bolt. On the passenger side hinge, there are no shims that I can see. The peak in the center fits just right on mine with the deck lid closed.

The one shim I found is rectangular 7/8" x 1-1/4", looks more like 3/64" rather than 1/32".

Looking at the 67 AIM, I do not see where one would use 8 shims. Maybe on a St. Louis car, but mine is an AOS car

How does yours fit in the front at the sides. Maybe the problem is in the front latches and weatherstrip, that holds the rear too high. Just a thought.

      Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the description of the shim on your car decklid. I think you are correct that the weatherstrip and latch adjustment needs to be rechecked. Believe it or not the latch that's bolted on the drivers side of the decklid has two hood hinge shims under the outside two bolts and I don't believe it's ever been off. The assembly line must have grabbed what ever they had to fit these lids.

The decklid to hinge bolts are 5/16" and I wanted to double check the type of shim used here, it seems as if the shim designed for a 3/8 bolt is used here. The picture at the Paragon website shows a shim that looks different than I recall seeing.

After removing the rubber it sits down better but I need to install a thicker shim at the front bolt to fit it better before re-installing the soft weatherstrip.

          Kirk,

All I can see is edge of it on both sides of the hinge mount, and it is a little bit skewed like some factory worker hastily applied it. It is not slotted on the ends, but could be slotted on the long side. But I can't tell without taking it off.

Since it has been untouched for 44 years, I don't want to take it off to take a picture Maybe someone else has a picture.

            Gerry,

I have another question about the wedges used on the decklid and body. One is plastic and one is pot metal, I just want to double check which one goes where to be sure mine is correct.

The plastic shims that go with these wedges according to the AIM go on the decklid, is that what you see on your 67?

            Thanks as always, Tim

Metal on decklid with shims. Plastic goes on deck jamb opening on the body. If your hinge corners are flush you probably need to form the weatherstrip in the center by letting it set with 50-80lbs of weight on it for a week or two.

                Tim,

I think Rich has it correct, metal wedge on the lid, plastic on the body. There seems to be some type of shim, gasket or cushion behind both wedges, can't tell what the material is. Here's some pictures:

                Lid wedge:

                Body wedge:

Here's what I can see of the one hinge shim I found:

                Hope this helps,

                  Thanks Jerry and Rich,

Those pictures clear it up for me, I am not sure how mine are but I want to double check..
