    1984 Goodyear Tires

I have a set of 1984 wheels and tires. The wheels appear to have not been mounted on a car. However, 2 of the tires have the side markings recessed, e.g., Goodyear and Eagle and the other two have the Goodyear and Eagle side markings slightly raised. All 4 have gatorback tred design. Anyone know why the difference? Are 2 original (early 84) and the other 2 replacement (later 84 /85)?

    Thanks,
    Rick

Just a suggestion Rick: check the date codes on those tires. That may reveal something. IIRC the original 1984 tires had the recessed labeling, but C4 stuff is a long way from my area of expertise -- I have to rely on my memory from 1984 and that is not the best idea around here.

      Terry:
I'm with you, all I know about the C4's is that they began in 1984 and ended in 1996. I'll check the date labeling on the tires. Are these dates coded or do they actually state the year of manufacture?

      Appreciate your reply.

        Re: 1984 Goodyear Tires

ALL tires after the first quarter of 1971 have a government mandated (thank you DOT) date code. No secrets.

For tires made in the last century (1971 to 1999): The last three numbers of the stamped code (generally on the inside of the wheel/tire assembly) represent WWY -- that is WW= week of the year and Y= the last digit of the year. so 294 would in your case represent 29th week of 1984.

There were some differences beginning in 1998 or 1999 and then when 2000 came around it was the last four numbers of the stamped code represents WWYY. They gave two numbers for the year so now we can tellt he decade the tire was produced in.

        Complete with photos:

To avoid confusion Terry, I believe you mean 29th week of 84 correct ??

OK, '84 used the indented logos. All 1984 production. '85MY switched to the raised logos, and the '85 style was the service tire from the time the original '84 run was exhausted, and the two you have with the raised logos are service replacements if seen on an '84, may be correct (dates specific) for an '85 or later.

All 1984 Corvettes came with the inverted letter Goodyear Gatorbacks. The inverted style was one year ONLY. 1985 model year Corvettes came with the slightly razed black letter Goodyear Gatorbacks.
I bought two extra complete sets back in 86 when the Goodyear dealer was selling the "leftover" 84 Inverted Letter Gatorbacks cheap. Kept them for years and then sold them to Roger at Rogers Corvettes down in FL. He loves Goodyear like myself. Also bought one extra sets of GS-C's when they came out for my 95. Nice having those factory style Goodyear tires.

You guys came through again. Thanks for all the info. I'll check the date codes just so I have the details.

                All the best.

                    Re: 1984 Goodyear Tires

Concerning the 83-84 Good year tires. Long time NCRS member Dave Cardina told me his brother Tony was the engraver for the indented Goodyear tires. As Bill Clupper mentioned it's a one model year tire. I used to own a May 83 car. When I lost it I didn't give up a set of original 84 tires. Not for sell though.
Info on the tires is in the Early C4 judging manual.
