    1965 Power Steering Bracket Color

On the power steering bracket (3832131) that is mounted on the underside of the frame that the end of the hydraulic ram goes through, is this cast bracket painted black or is it natural?

    Thanks

    Jim -

The midyear JG's are silent on this issue, so I guess no one knows for sure (nor do I). That said, the stamped steering stabilizer frame bracket that attaches in the same location below the frame, using the same bolt holes, on small-blocks without power steering, is called out in the JG's as being primed semi-gloss black. When I judge a car with that cast bracket painted black, I don't take a deduction.

      Jimmy,

Because brackets, pulleys, braces etc. were produced by the thousands, most if not all were dipped into paint and hung in racks to dry.
Now for the color it depends how old the paint was and mostly what the humidity and temperature was when the item was pulled from the vat.
These items were hung on a conveyer and as they passed thru the paint they were flooded with paint and trash.
If you see a perfect bracket or pulley with a gloss black finish that is perfect the owner was just dreaming when that was painted.

Call it black and roll your own as that is mostly what the supplier to GM did.

I can tell you this: the SERVICE bracket was supplied as un-painted cast iron. I expect that the bracket was supplied the same way to PRODUCTION. So, unless it was painted at St. Louis (which I doubt), it would have been natural.

I thought I would give this old thread a bump since I was using the search function to find this same info and hoping some new info has come to light. Black or natural ?????

            Brian,

I going to have to agree with both John and Joe as repacement brackets were cast iron and not painted BUT I have never seen or removed a production bracket that was not painted in the above procedure I described. That does not mean that one doesn't exist as replacement parts on many positions came unpainted and several Corvettes have received damage as they all approach 50 years of age.

PS. In the restoration of Corvettes one should never use the phrase "And That's the Way it Was".
