    Transmission Leak

    Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any additive to stop/lessen a transmission fluid leak at the front where the gear shaft goes in?

    Thanks,

    Bob

      Re: Transmission Leak

      John,

One is my T-10 shown in the first photo. I had it re-geared by a well-known specialist. It was two years before I put it in after I restored my '60 and it leaked. Too late to worry about a warranty and I didn't want to take it out and send it back since it was judging season.

The second is my Tremec 5-speed that I got back in Feb-Mar with 500 or so break-in miles on it. Again, it may be under warranty, but pulling it out at this point isn't something I'd look forward to doing.

      Any recommendations appreciated!

      Thanks,

      Bob

        Bob,
They will all leak if they are over filled, and that doesn't mean pouring out the fill hole.

The front ball bearing on the T-10 and most other transmissions lube and spill back thru a hole at the bottom of the input shaft housing.

Some hahe a oil slinger that pushes the oil back when the shaft turns.

The problem is when the oil level is to high. It will exit thru the input shaft hole and can get on the clutch plate.

This also happens when you break hard.

The old level as I remember was 1/2 " down from the fill hole when cold, but I since learned that it is supposed to be lower, ( a specific amount of oil).

When I was buying Munci parts another old timer told me the level that was supposed to be used and it was in even pints that were i pint lower than recomended. I think the boob said 5 pints and the correct amount was 4.

Any way it was about 5/8 " below the hole when cold.

I have done many of these transmissions and found some very low because of a bad rear seal or shift seals and they still lubed great because the gears sling the oil everywhere.

I would guess that is your problem.

          I agree with Dom.
I had a 62 that I sold and before it was picked up I topped up all the fluids including the T10 transmission.
The buyer noticed a pool of oil on the floor under the trans. and asked if I just filled up. I said yes and he was not worried about the leak since he said I overfilled it.
          Live and learn.
