    Radio Delete 59

I'm finishing up a 59 radio delete car. I just installed the speaker grill and dash pad and I'm not sure what goes under the grill. What ever it was I don't have it. Will any one familiar with radio delete cars please give me some input.
    Thank You

My no radio '59 had a non Corvette radio installed when I got it. I understand it had a black cardboard block off panel installed under the speaker grille. There was a thread about this awhile back. I don't think it is available anywhere but one can be cut out of an old trunk divider cardboard and it will be close to what was there, so I have been told.

A search shows the the topic was related to '57 speaker block offs. I hope someone with an original '58-'62 no radio car will have the right info. I would like to know too.

Technically speaking, there's no such thing as a 1959 radio delete car. The base car came without a radio and the option was to add the radio.

Therefore, just look at the appropriate section of your copy of the '59 AIM book on the base car concerning the area you have interest in. The AIM ought to show you how a base car without radio option was built...

Thanks for the input, but I have not come across anything in the assemble manual that indicates whats under the speaker grill in a radio delete car.I've heard there was a cardboard panel,if so how and were could I obtain a pattern, example,or photo?

            Steve -

See the illustration at the top of page 214 in Noland's book - it shows only the bezel and screen used for cars without radios (no cardboard panel); you should have that same illustration in your Assembly Manual.

My '59 was delivered without a radio. I changed out the original speaker grille for the later bezel and grille because the dash pad was curling around the original grille. I did this long before NCRS was born; originality was not a factor. I don't have or remember a cardboard insert. I did save the original screen and bolts, so I am inclined to think there was no cardboard, but can't be sure.

                Thanks John
I went to Noland's book and after studying the illustration I tend to agree. It does surprise me that they didn't put something under that grill. By the way I have an early 59 with no bezel.Until someone proves differently thats the way its going to stay. If ever I get this car judged and recieve a deduction for this I'll call you.

My 59 is a no radio car and Tim Micky 58-60 team leader told me it was a medium grey cardboard about 1/32 thick. I found some 81/2"X11 sheets at an art supply store about half that thickness and glued them togeather. Got judged at Joplin and Novi with no deducts. This was on a June 59 car and still had the no bezel speaker screen.

My '59 is an early November '58 build and has no bezel. I still have the original dash pad on the car also.
