If you were following the recent posting regarding intake gaskets, we learned that Gary Pronesti ("Gary P") is the member to talk to regarding purchasing the proper intake gaskets for judging. If you need to contact him, I have his number...just PM me and I'll provide it. I hesitate to post it on the open Web without his knowledge/permission. (Thank you Ron.)
However, as it happens, Gary knows small blocks. Me, I have a big block, a '70 LS-5. While he does have some 454 end gaskets available, he's not sure (and neither am I) if they're the proper gaskets or not. He's researching on his end, and I promised to ask the board if anyone here knows. I'm not in a position yet to remove the intake manifold and verify myself by sight.
The end gaskets he has have three alignment bores, if I understood him correctly. The "GM" is definitely on a tab. He mentioned three "metal pins," which I took to be alignment pins that pass through the gasket?
On my engine, the "GM" tab is present and smack, dab in the middle of the manifold, resting on the block. It was painted along with the engine itself (orange). Smaller than I expected reading the TIMJG.
Little bugger. No ridge. I don't see any evidence of alignment pins, but I didn't honestly expect to. If they were there, they'd be interior to the mating surfaces and wouldn't probably be visible on the edge we can see.
Anyone rebuilt their 454 (maybe even 427) and knows if my (admittedly weak) description is accurate? When Gary talks with his Tonawanda contact, I'll report back what he finds.
