Is it possible to dye black?

I've seen some threads that are very positive about using dye. My 66 is supposed to have dark blue interior, but it is currently black.

Would it be possible to dye the black to dark blue, e.g., the dash pads, seats, headliner, and door panels

    Thanks,
    Don

The dash pads, headliner, and even the door panels will do well. I would opt. to change the seat covers. They will not do well.

PO had gone to black in my '68. I used SEM automotive interior dye and shot the correct 411 dark blue over the black without any problems.

It's been twenty plus years and the SEM still looks good.

It's impossible to dye vinyl in a literal sense. You can paint it with elastomeric coloring such as SEM or Dupont interior color. Way it was done originally

So is that what all the vendor sell that they call Dye? Long Island corvette, Corvette America, etc.?

          Thanks,

ALso, is the elastomeric paint also used on the metal trim and dash areas that are also the interior color?

Don't know about all but the dupont(hard to get) and the SEM (go to product) are elastomeric. Can't find the spec interior sheet for 66 but here's 70 which show elastomeric IS used on metal parts.

Can you dye over dye? My 70 Z28 was a green custom cloth interior and a previous owner dyed the Green door panels black. Or is there a way to safely remove the black.

You should actually be able to use a dye on cloth. (assuming a dye was used the first time) Sure is was easier going from green to black then reversing. I would test an area not seen first.

People say they use SEM on carpets, but I can't say how that works. Sem is a paint and not waterbased at that.(which you should look for in a dye for the cloth)

The seats will be recovered. I just need the door panels and the plastic parts back green.

Re: Is it possible to dye black?

OK, so is there anyone out there who has used either the elastomeric coloring such as SEM or Dupont interior color or what Corvette America and Long Island Corvette call Dyes for all their C2 interior parts. In particular the dash, dash pads, and metal window and door moldings, and shifter console color inset.

As I said earlier, both LIC and Corvette America websites say their dyes are for all surfaces including leather, vinyl, fiberglass, plastic, and metal. I really only want to tear the dash apart one time so I want to make sure I use the right materials to return the color to the correct Dark Blue.

                      Thanks,

                      Don

Re: Is it possible to dye black?

                        Don,

I used the "dye" from Corvette America on my '64. I did the dash, the eyebrow pads, sun visors, radio panels, radio grill, shifter console and metal trim around the windows and doors. All were originally dark blue and had been dyed black. I stripped the console, radio grill, radio panels and metal trim completely and removed as much of the black dye as I could off the pads, visors and dash with 3M adhesive remover. I primed the surfaces with the appropriate primers and then applied dye. It's been about 5 years and there has been no lifting. There are some hairline cracks around the radio grill. Otherwise it is holding up well.

                        Hope this helps.

                        Curtis

I did an interior in a Benz with Mar-Hyde and it came out beautifully. I have used SEM on other projects with great results. Believe it or not, the manufacturer is not nearly as important as the prep. PREP IS THE KEY. You can use a wax and grease remover then a prep made by the same maufacturers. Personally, I do a final wipe down with lacquer thinner. That is what I beleive has given me great results.

I think I'll order some of the Corvette America stuff and give it a try

Can these dyes be put on with a brush or must they be sprayed?
