I recently purchased a 92 conv with 22k orig miles, the auto ac blows cold but not out of the ac vents, just thru the defrost and the lower heater ducts, does anyone know where to get a replacement unit ot do I have a different problem

If you need the controller, that's going to be a problem. The controller was GM #16162118 but it's GM-discontinued.

Autoecms (www.autoecms.com) usually has remanufactured controllers of this type available but they don't show this one. You might contact them, though.

Here's a possible source if you need one:

Not sure if it is the same, but the same problem on my '89 was caused by a failure in a vacuum operated lever in the dash that activated a flapper in the system that opened and closed to move the airflow from heater outlets to defrost. I believe there was a procedure in the service manual to troubleshoot that problem. The controller was not the problem in my case, would have been a MUCH easier fix!

          Hi Steve:

Do all of the selector buttons appear to light up ? I don't have all of your information and certainly cannot diagnose your condition online, but I would think you have another issue other than the control head.

A lot of times the damper will stick closed if the the car sets up for a while. You may want to check the damper to see if they move freely.

Steve, had the same prob on my '93 when I got it back together. Was a loose vacuum line under the passenger side foot well.
              Good luck, John G.

Steve my 96LT4 original owner has done this. I do not take it out of the garage very much, 3 times this year. I was really surprised when it occurred this year. After about 15 minutes of use going down the road it fixes itself. Does yours consistantly blow cooled air from the heater ducts after you are on the road for awhile?
