    C2 Hood support Adhesive

I searched previous threads on the subject of the proper way to reglue the hood to the hood support on C2's. Mine has separated in about 6 places near the center. A recommended product was DAP Premium Poly Roof and Flashing sealer. This was posted in 2007, anyone know if this works or is there a better way to make this repair?

    Thanks in advance

Make sure the surfaces are clean with solvent like alcohol or lacquer thinner.

Use the 2 component epoxy that comes in a caulk gun tube with a mixing nozzle and then have a way of adding weight to hold the two pieces together until it sets.

Ron: Thanks for the info. I thought there might be a more current solution than the DAP product. Epoxy seems like the way to go.

I'm out of town so I do not have the tube I used close by, but the boating supply places have many of these products for fiber glass repair.

You want to make sure you get the areas a cleaned out of the old materials and then if you do it with caution, perhaps a little practice, you can replicate the same squeeze out look as the original had.

Rick..DO NOT USE epoxy it can cause marks in the exterior of the hood when it cures. This has been discussed at lenght on the board. I used Loctite PL Roof & Flashing Sealant from Lowes. It remains flexible and does an excellent job..Bill

I am sure the regular epoxy could get crystal hard, but the boat builders don't like wavy decks any more than we want sinks in our BC CC hoods.

I had no problems with mine and I would expect have some level of flex worked into this as its design specifically for bonding gloss smc panels and is not something that can be sanded and painted.

              Rick,

I think I'd use that Polyurethane Roofing and Flashing sealant, instead of the epoxy.

I did my 67 hood with that stuff in 2007 and it is still holding very good. It stays flexible and you can paint it after it cures. If you use the black, it matches the hood blackout.

I think the epoxy will eventually reflect through the paint on the top of the hood.

                Ron -

The hood inner panel was only bonded to the outer panel for an inch or so around the periphery of the hood; the adhesive (which we called "gumdrops" in the plant) was used instead on the rest of the inner panel bracing members to avoid "bond-burn" distortions in the highly-visible hood outer surface. The polyester bond chemistry is an exothermic reaction when it cures, and the heat generated can distort Class "A" surfaces that are in the driver's field of view all the time.

I used the polyurethane that was recommended in the archives. It worked perfectly and the hood is now rock solid. Avoid epoxy like the plague.

                      Rick,

Here's those pictures of my 67 hood project, lost in the archives:

If it works on roofs and gutters for 50 years, it will work on your 67 hood.
It sticks to anything, even your hands.

When I repaired the hood on my '65 in 2003, I used a 3M #8085 Seam Sealer product which I purchased at a Sherwin Williams automotive paint supply. It worked very well but you only have about a five minute window to apply the adhesive before it starts to set up and harden.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I tried the Polyurathane Adhesive on my 67 hood and it worked great. With a little care I was able to make it look close to original glue job.

I appreciate all the NCRS members who have such great ideas and are willing to share them.
