C3 Goodyear vs Firestone

Was there any rhyme or reason which cars received Goodyear RWL vs Firestone RWL tires?

My 1970 spare is a Goodyear Wide Tread, but most pictures I see show Firestone Wide Ovals.

No rhyme or reason. Also no choice -- unless you talked the dealer into making a swap from another Corvette he had in stock, but then some 40 years later we will be debating wheel date codes.

Terry, I took delivery of my '77 Nov. '76. The original "Dealer Copy", which the dealer gave me, has hand written in ink Firestone. Any idea why he may have written this on the copy? IF I would have had a choiceI would have ordered the GY's because we know what happened to the Firestones, which I still have in the garage.

When I bought my 71, I requested Goodyear RWL tires. The salesman told me he could not guarantee the brand of tire the car would come with.

When it came in with the GoodYears he smiled and told me I just got lucky. Now I am looking for a set again to have the car judged with. The circle of life.

Wen I ordered my 1985 and 1994 GMC's I told the salesman (Yup..same guy) I wanted Goodyears. He told me both times he couldn't guarantee which I would get. I told him I would not accept delivery with any other tires. Both came in with GY's. Coincidence?

My response was about Mike F's 1970 Corvette question, but would have been the same for Steve's 1971 Corvette question. I know nothing about pick-m-up trucks or newer than 1972 Corvettes, however I would say in all these cases -- unless you were standing there when the carrier was unloaded you have no idea what brand tire St Louis put on your vehicle. The dealers can, and frequently did, swap wheels and tires to satisfy a customer preference. And that was no coincidence.

(Steve, My contractor crews left for the East Coast [I don't know where, but I would bet around Philly] Thursday night/Friday early AM. The utility crews left for Philly Friday mid-day. I hear help is on the way from as far away as Oklahoma, but you might be lucky. It sounds like the hollering might be worse than the reality. Good luck to all of you in the East. I talked to a Bostonian on the phone earlier today. Everyone is hunkered down. Stay safe.)

Thanks, Terry. I guess I should have made my point clearer, but what I was trying to say is that I did have a choice. There probably was no order option to specify tire brands, but whatever that dealer had to do, he seemed to do it. Maybe all the trucks with my configuration came through with Goodyear, although I don't think so, because I saw other trucks on the lot with Firestone. I really didn't and don't care what they did to get me what I wanted, but they DIDN'T tell me it was my tough luck if I got something other than I asked for. Luck of the draw? Ordering options? Dealer exchange? It doesn't and didn't matter to me. The dealer was interested in customer satisfaction and that is what kept me going back to him. Those trucks were not my only purchases there.

OBTW: I have nothing against Firestone tires. At the time I was getting excellent service out of Goodyear tires and just wanted what I wanted.
