69 427 water pump # what should it be?

Looking for the correct part number for my 69 427-435HP car water pump. Judging manual says it should be 3856284 but the corvette by the numbers book says 3856284 is correct for early cars only and late cars should have 3940960. My car was build august 8th of 69. Which water pump do I need? Thanks, Jeff

Go to the "Search" function and type in "3940960". You will find many threads about this very subject. The short answer is that either could have been used on your car.

Jeff, don't get too hung up on the number as it's not judged. My Dec 10 '68 L71 has the 284 pump.

I would say that your car almost certainly was originally equipped with the 3940960. This is one of the more rare waterpump castings because it was only used on Corvette and MD/HD trucks and only for about a 14 month period. However, they are not impossible to find. I'm sure that Bill Mock could fix you up with one.

I found one (a 960) on ebay thats dated 5 weeks prior to my car. It cost me $385! Oh well at least I got the correct one. It's not the only thing I paid more than I thought I was going to for this car.

Yeah, more than I wanted to spend but it is rebuilt and has a good date for my car. I couldn't find another. Of course next week I'll see one for less.
