    Tach inop

    Hello everyone,
The tachometer on my 65 coupe is inop. I unscrewed
the cable from the back of the tach and ran the car,
it spun even with giving it a little resistance. There
is only about 1/4 inch of the cable showing if I look
inside where it comes thru the housing, I'm thinking
maybe it broke off inside the tach. How much cable should
be sticking thru? If it needs a cable can I replace just the
cable or should I replace the cable and housing?
    Thanks,
    Karl

Karl, I believe theres is about 3/4 in. of cable sticking through. you may be correct. If you start up car with the cable off does the drive on the dist. spin? also if you can spin the cable and see if the tach needle jumps, it only leaves the cable

Karl you can also remove the piece that your 65's tack cable connects to from the distributor and inspect the gear that is turned by the distributor shaft. If the gearing on the tack drive piece has broken gearing you will also have to replace the distributor shaft because the gearing will also be broken.
