    When was the pad stamped?

For a 59, when was the engine pad stamped during production? Were the heads on/off? Was the water pump/engine mount installed?
    Thanks

The engine production code was stamped after the heads were installed on the engine.

      Joe:
Thanks for the info. So if the heads and water pump/engine mount were installed, any stamps high up or low down on the pad must be a restamp since it appears impossible for a gang holder to be placed anywhere other than pretty much in the center of the pad. Again, thanks.

        Steve -

I wouldn't make that generalization - the pad was stamped right after the engine was turned right-side-up and the heads went on; the water pump (and engine mount bracket on Corvette engines) went on later.

Thanks John. At least too high a stamp would be suspect.

Was not the engine portion stamped prior to the VIN portion? So the engine stamp could have been higher and then the heads forced the VIN stamp lower, according to your lodgic. I was thinking of 68. I don't know the process for others.

              Dale -

The St. Louis VIN stamp didn't start until 1960; prior to that, the engine plant stamp was the only one on the pad.
