    Stamping Pad question

    I recently found a 62 sitting in a back yard for the last 30ish years. The man I bought it from said he was second owner and other than the attempted paint job, nothing has been changed on it that he knows of. Anyway it looks original; however I am having trouble with the stamp pad. The block NO. is 3782870, but the stamp pad has F0605S. I have looked in both the Black Book and Corvette by the Numbers, and have not been able to identify the stamp pad. I could really use some help on this one. [/font]
    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Stamping Pad question

    Is there another letter after the "S"? Is it a powerglyde car? What is the VIN? Is the Vin also on the pad? Sounds like a replacement motor from a Chevy.

      Lime Book shows S as 62-64 327/250 automatic passenger car. SC or SD would be correct for a Corvette engine, both automatic.

        Jim use a good light and mag glass sometime some of the letters are stamped very light and very hard to see. Phil 8063

            Jim looking at the photos, most likely a replacement motor no vin, no stamp after S you need to look at the casting date for the year of the block. Phil 8063

              Jim -

              There should be a Borg-Warner assembly date code stamped on the machined surface adjacent to the upper rear corner of the side cover.

                Re: Stamping Pad question

                Same question for my 62.

                the stamp pad has CEB 1569 58

                The "58" is way over to the right.

                Not 100% sure of the letter between C and B.

                The numbers on the rear drivers side of the engine are 3959512

                This is at least the 3rd block that's been in the car. It started out as a 340 hp 4 speed.

                I think it now has a hydraulic cam similar to a 350 hp 65.

                The number on the trans is 52362A which I think translates as a wide ratio 4 speed.

                The intake manifold has the number 3794129 GM and the snowflake pattern which apparently indicates a winter manifold.

                  Bob,
                  Your block is a replacement sold "over the counter". The "CE" part of the stamping stands for Chevrolet Engine. The "3959512" casting number did not appear until sometime after the year 1967, probably in the 1970's.

                  Back in the very early 1980's Dobles Chevrolet in Manchester, NH, had a NORS 283 engine with "3959532" casting number, "I 23 5" (Sept. 23, 1975) casting date, and pad stamped "CE 6 N 23636" and "S0428XCA" (April 28, 1976).

                  "CE" = Chevrolet Engine
                  "6" = 1976, I assume
                  "N" = ?
                  "23636" = 23,636th replacement engine made, I assume

                    James,

                    Your "F0605S" (June 5, 196?) Flint 327 block is from a Chevrolet passenger car, not a replacement over the counter block. You can tell the year by the casting number located on the back of the block. Passenger cars did NOT have a partial VIN stamped on the pad.

                      Thanks.

                      This makes sense. My father replaced the engine every 100,000 miles. And guessing that he drove 20,000 per year, that means a new engine in 67 and another in 72.

                      then he retired in 75 and didn't drive it as much.

                      So I'm guessing the "2" means 72.

                      The "CE" must come in handy. Keeps you from accidentally buying a Ford.

                        Bob,

                        The casting date on the top back side of the block will tell you the month, day, and year.

                        Where is the "2" in the "CEB 1569 58" stamping"?
