    noisey 1960 generator tachometer drive

Installed new generator tach drive and a CC reproduction low horsepower 1960 tachometer. Works and looks great BUT there is a low pitch whine within the cable and at the back of the tach. Are there any tricks to quieting or eliminating this noise?

Have you tried tach/speedometer lube? It is messy, but it usually will quiet the cable. If you hear it in the tach drive, that is a different story, bushing may be wearing down. I would bet it is a dry cable. I believe the lube is inserted in the cockpit end of the cable.

      Jef,

With the car running, have someone in the driver's seat listen to the noise. Have another person lift the hood and play with the location of the cable from the firewall back to the generator. Move the casing around and see if the noise changes or goes away. If it does, keep moving the casing around until you find a position that eliminates the noise.
If not, cable lubrication is probably warranted.

Lots of threads on cable lubing - check the archives.

Are you using a repro or original Cable?? Reason I mention this is I went through a similar problem after getting my Tach rebuilt in my 59 and it turned out to be a crappy repo cable. I decided to re-use my old housing and found the right core replacement and voila noise gone. Can't speak for everyone, but all the "exact" reproduction cables I have dealt with recently required some tweaking to get them to work right (when I could). Funny the generic ones seem to work better. Dan
