Correct SBC fan clutch - 327/350 HP

    Hello All,

I'd like someone to confirm I have the correct fan clutch configuration for my '67 L79. All the info from the judging manual agrees to what I have, but the book is shy of what the face should look like. Is the one in the photo correct? Thanks for the help.

    Kurt,

It looks like the Eaton coil type fan clutch that was used in 1967 as well as other years. It looks like someone painted it as there once were ink stampings on the face of it. Refer to the link below. There are also many other threads about fan-clutches.

CONFIGURATION appears to be correct for a 1967 Eaton clutch. As Dave stated earlier, missing ink stamps. Finish is also deteriorated and was painted by previous owner. Original finish was a gold cad.

If you tell us when the car was made, we can provide the needed date code.

There are a few folks out there that rebuilt and refinish.

Is there a date stamp on the flange that bolts up to the water pump pulley? It should be on the narrow side in very small font, not the main mounting surface where the bolt holes are.

          Chris:

I have seen this on the "bar-type" clutches, but not on the Eaton "coil spring" clutches. Do you have a specific example or a picture of an Eaton with the flange stamped??

The Eaton date code and application code were both ink stamped to my knowledge.

            Hi Larry,

Engine stamped is Dec. 5th, 1966, body date, Dec. 12th and finial assembly date is Dec. 14th.

David, thanks for the info and link.

Small block Eaton unts were stamped "CJ".

For date coding, three or four characters are used. Font is the same as the CJ.

The first letter represents the month , the second/third is the day of the month, and the final character is the year...with 1960 being "A".

For example: C3H would represent March 3, 1967.

You would probably want something like December 2, 1966 which would be L2G. Or possibly November 15, 1966 which would be K15G. I think either would work for you.

Others may have more opinions or suggestions.
