Cam Grind ? Solid vrs Hydraulic

Hi, Is a solid lifter cam ground different than a hydrauilc cam ? Can you use solid lifters with a cam that was designed for hydraulic lifters?

    regards Bill

There are more that will give you every thing you want to know about your post but I can say this much.

They have a different ramp and you can't put solids on a hydraulic cam and vise versa to be technical.

In the old days the guys would put hydraulic lifters with a solid lifter cam and get away with it but the solid lifter leaves the cam lobe and has to land on it again and again and that was what I was told the ramp was for (the landing).

The hydraulic lifter stayes with the lobe and adjusts every time the lobe turns.

The hydraulic lifter HAS to bleed oil out to adjust and fills again with oil preasure.

The bleed off time for a hydraulic lifter using karosine is about 19 to 21 sec on the lifters I test.

If it doesn't bleed off it will hold the valve open or not have enough preasure against the valve seat to cool properly and the valve will burn.

In the late seventies I built three oil less V8 engines to demonstrate BG products MOA which contained the zincdyalcoldyphospate. To run when the pan was lowered I had to run solid lifters. I just used them on the used hydraulic cam and never had a problem for the many years I and my associates used them. I will say that most of the run time was idle time with just a couple of wing ups for each hour demonstration. I wouldn't do it on a car I was driving though.
        It's a good life!
