HELP -Can't Get Canister Oil Filter to Seal

63 340 HP is sitting on the hoist and we cannot get the new gasket for the canister to seal. The new one seems to be tall and narrow while the old one was flatter and wider. Cannot reuse the old one as it came apart.Any ideas or suggestions?

Did you remove the center piece which is held in place by 1/4" bolts to make sure nothing is still in the groove?

Sounds like the gasket is narrow and some aftermarket cannister walls are thin which may allow the cannister to not seat on the gasket. You may need to purchase another filter gasket in hopes of getting one that is wider, or another original cannister that has thicker walls. (.100")

I don't believe it. We just realized that the by pass adapter is missing!!!!

Now | know why the old gasket just fell out.

You are extremely lucky that the gasket didn't decide to move at about 70 mph.....

Re: HELP -Can't Get Canister Oil Filter to Seal - UPDATE

Well we resolved the issue. Could not source a replacement bypass adapter that we could get before the end of the business day but a local engine shop had an adapter in stock to convert it over to a spin on filter. Relatively inexpensive fix and it is keeping oil in the engine so we could get it off the hoist and make the car mobile.

What I cannot believe is that three of us, two who are licensed mechanics, and after trying two or three times to get the canister to seal, stood there and stared at it like dummies for over 1/2 hour trying to figure out how to solve the problem. That is when one person finally woke up to the fact that something was not only amiss but missing altogether.

Kind of amazing it did not leak before. I have "bubba ed" a few things in my younger days (like many of us) but to get a canister type oil filter not to leak without the bypass well that is something else.
